I can half help on number 2

I bought one off ebay that lasted two weeks & was toast, I've now binned it as it's not repairable. "cae-sales" was the supplier.

If you've got the "Tilton" one on, get it refurbed.

I got an uprated one off Ebay, 1.7kW. I paid £248 and the supplier was C.E. Smith & Sons, Epping Essex.

Had no problem with it at all, and I've fitted a few now and this has been the best so far.

Went throught 3 of those in a weekend, each time clutch had gone. They replaced them no problems but didn't have the heart to fit the third although I was getting quite quick at it in the end.
Good news you got a good one but it does seem a bit hit and miss to me.
Tried another supplier since then, that fried itself in a month, currently on a Race Mettle. 2 months in and it still starts - must be a record.
Cheers

I spoke to race mettle but they were bloody expensive! Would be interested to know how it is in 6 months. How often do you use your car, everyday or weekends?

Yep wasn't overkeen on the price either but had enough of the same old starters and gave up. Can't say if it's going to be the answer yet but so far it's been fine. No I don't use the car everyday, maybe 3 or 4 days a week if I get time and usually only stop for fuel (and to get out of course)so I'm probably not doing enough to expose any weakness's if it has any. But then again the others all failed under exactly the same circumstances.
Oh and for the money I was hoping for a bit more than 6 months driving
Still good news your's is going okay.

That's only because the previous owner looked after it so well

Seriously, this seems to be a common fault so could be good for a DIY guide.

That's the one I had (C E Smith)

Mine lasted a fortnight.

I know you get 12 months guarantee, but the price of someone removing & refitting twice a month, gets quite expensive after a bit.

I've no doubt they're normally pretty good, and I was unlucky.

By the way, that one off fleabay has no "Tilton" markings on it whatsoever.

It may be a Tilton case (not marked), but the inside isn't Tilton.

Just noticed on "Tilton's" web site.

UK dealers are "Demon tweeks" & "GPR Motorsports"

Definitely not a Tilton case either, apart from the position of the mounting holes there aren't many similarities, the Tilton just looed way better engineered. Still broke though.

hi jens i have recently replaced my starter, well actually had it reconned as it was the original tilton a guy in west mids did a cracking job charged me £130 for complete recon with full twelve month guarantee. not difficult to change either remove front cowl, remove fuel rail (four allen pins) i then disconnected a couple of the fuel pipes which gave me more access i could then undo the two allen bolts which hold the starter in place.mine also has a heat shield around the solenoid which just clips off swivel starter round 180 deg and disconnect electrical connections then i could just wangle it out through the gap between engine and bulkhead refitting is basically reversal of the aforementioned ps dont forget to disconnect battery hope this helps, if you want the guys number let me know his company is called rare developments and is in bloxwich near walsall

If you've tried to attach it then it hasn't worked. Fancy dropping me an email through my profile and we can work out getting it stuck it on the website with all the other good stuff?
