Custom SS Exhaust- Optimal Configuration?
Discussion
I’m looking to get a cat-back, custom stainless exhaust to replace my beaten up old sports pipes and I was hoping for some information on what is the optimal configuration to have.
I’ve heard talk of 3inch and 2 ½ inch systems and I know that longbow had a straight through 3 inch system, which was supposed to be quite loud
I already have a set of TCS linked de-cats and I’m planning on the whirlwind induction and remap to suit, so I would like a system that would compliment these upgrades.
Quite like the idea of a straight thru setup but I dont know if this would loose power over one with silencers? Does the AJP like a bit of back pressure?
Thanks
Pete

That's an understatement!
My MoT guy actually refused to test the car with it fitted!
I had a cat back SS system made for my car, have a chat with these guys: www.powerspeed.co.uk My system, with a few extras was around £800.
Tim
Have you considered the SP system?
Plenty of R&D went into creating this high performance system that sounds great, gains power, yet stays under trackday noise threshold. Beautifully made too, all stainless with chrome tips. My and Nickccc's cars (pictured) both use the SP system and have been tuned by Joolz to 420bhp and 440bhp respectively.

Pitty you are not near these guys.

They make the zorst to measure. Car has to be there for 3 days, and the exhaust it fabricated to what ever you want, all in S/Steal. Can have 2.5 or 3 inch all the way thought if you like, or a full cat back.
Heres the killer against the SP system.
Cat back £720
from cats backwards £600
Add vat to this lot, and it really is a nice way to get a fantastic exhuast and cheaper the what was is, £1125 for a cat back SP system???
I know which I will go for.

If you think exhausts are just a case of bending pipes of your [arbitrary] size choice for as little cost as possible, go right ahead. On the other hand if performance matters and - more to the point - being able to use that performance on tracks that are under increasing pressure to reduce noise limits then you might think again.
Engineering to specific criteria is not the same as "pipe bending to fit". I'd be interested to know how much H&S would want to create a system to the same brief as the SP system - it won't be £720 plus vodka, that's for sure.
What it comes down to is a differential of about 300 quid, for more power and the ability to drive your car on track.

Phil, not that I doubt the power gains from the SP system, but have a read up on H&S, you will see that they do know their stuff, and make zorst's for power gains too, and for most performance cars.
I just cant see £1125 + Vodka for the SP system worth the money, but thats just my opinion, others would disagree with me...

Perhaps if you saw the SP system instead of just its price you'd better understand what I am talking about. The bulk of the system price is in the rear box that balances a [typically] 98dB sound level with optimum gas flow and makes a fantastic sound - it ain't no ordinary silencer.
The price is £999 for the exhaust (from the headers back) or £1175.25 fitted. Prices include VAT.
I know of H&S and am not disregarding their work/talent, not by any means. I am simply drawing a distinction between a one-off exhaust made with any size pipe you want and a specially developed system to specific criteria. I am certain H&S could have made "an SP system" given a few months, some sample Cerberas, technical input and a rolling road - I am equally certain it wouldn't be £846.
While other Cerbera owners with all manner of alternatives from stock systems to other tuner's offerings were sharing, one at a time, FUBAR"s track day silencers (which didn't fit all the cars) at the Nurburgring, I had no such problems. Factor in a set of [power-sapping, rear mount-stretching, daft looking] track day silencers on top of your £846 and how much different is £1175 now? Or worse still consider the cost of going to Germany ...and then not being able to play.
Circuit noise limits are only going to get worse at the same time as being able to unleash 400bhp+ on the road gets harder. All I am suggesting is that you draw a conclusion from an appraisal of more factors than price.

Or you could try longlife. They have centers all over the UK and I can vouch for the quality of their systems.
You choose the look and sound you want
Very good VFM too.
No, I don't have any links with their company either

How the f**k can you go and choose an exhaust by looks and what you want it to sound like ? Thats Max Power talk, and it should stay with the Chavs and there Novas who think because it is loud and has 6" diameter tail pipes, then it must be good.
The SP system gives proven power gains, that is what it is designed for, and the way it looks and sounds is irrelevant really. Is it worth £1200.00? Well until there is some proven competition, yes it is, because it does what it is supposed to do.

So, if I 'bolt' on the SP system I will get what 15 - 20bhp more with a felting of map?

True, the Max power brigade probably do use them, but that was not what I was saying. I do think that even Cerbera owners do go by looks and sound too looking at some of the pictures on this forum
What I was saying was you have a choice - You can make the system as loud or as quiet as you like with a lot of input in how it looks if you are that way inclined.
As for power gains - I have no idea.
They are good value for money, that's all.
Oh, I have used them to make up defunct systems for some older classic cars, so I wouldn't consider myself a 35 Year Old chav

It varies from car to car and depends on what your current system is. After all other optimising with mapping/induction has been accounted for, the SP system will gain up to 10bhp on its own and that's probably the fairest way to look at it. However, A/B testing between systems on cars in whatever state of tune they arrive has seen gains higher than that which you could either credit the SP system with or simply put down to shortcomings in the previous system.
The basic thing to get right with making any high flow system for a cerbera is bigger is better for hp! get 3 inch pipes in there if you can, you will never lose midrange you can only gain gain gain!!
HOWEVER ..
as bosscerb has already said .. if you want a high flowing system which you can use to get on track days then things get a whole lot more complicated.
Anyone can make a high flow exhaust that will see the true potential of the engine in pure hp terms .. i've made a fair few myself for customers .. but if yo want them quiet and unrestrictive then that's where development time and money start mounting up and that has to be recouped in any sales of course ..
make no mistake, the SP system is high flowing and quiet!! It's no coincidence that the highest hp 4.5 and the highest hp 4.5 red rose on my dyno have also been the quiestest

Does that mean more baffles?
The only silencing in the system is in the rear box.
But just because it's "quiet", don't imagine it sounds muffled or muted. It's a tuned sound and as I've reported elsewhere on PH before, I've had owners of Yanks and Griffs enquire as to "what the heck is that exhaust?". On the Cerburgring tour, a photographer even came and found me to ask the same question because of the different sound my car made exiting the mini-carousel.

Have you considered the SP system?
I had considered this exhaust but I was hoping to find a cheaper alternative. I've only recently bought and fitted the link de-cats so it seems a waste to replace these with the full SP system. Its a lovely looking bit of kit and i've no doubt the amount of R&D it took to develop makes its price fair.

So a straight through 3 inch system would have similar if not better gains than the SP System? Obviously when mapped to suit? I work in nightclubs so I'm used to ringing ears
