Purchasing a Cerb 4.2 or a 4.5
Discussion
Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase a Cerbera and would like to get some advice on the two engines.
Do you think the 4.5 is just a better car and a better performer than the 4.2 or are there only small differences of the two.
I heard that the 4.2's are louder than the 4.5's and have a nice snap crackle pop sound.
A while back on a web sight named sleepy fish.com there was a small video of a diablo purple cerbera driving out of a parking lot. The cerb sounded awesome. The car was loud as hell and had awesome back fires. Does any one know of this Cerbera and how could I duplicate that sound.
Thanks for your advice, but most of all just wondering about your guys opinion on the two.
I never owned a TVR but looking to invest in a Cerbera.

They are all loud, depending on exhausts cats no cats etc and fuelling will make it bang and pop.
mine has sports pipes and has been decatted, it is mentally loud, it doesn't so much pop and band as explode but if I am honest think it is too loud so I will be toning it down. Also you will find many cerb owners have difficulty tacking their car on sound monitored track days because of exhaust tweeks.
as for 4.2 and 4.5. I have a 4.2 and it's great, power output is as TVR advertised, many people have 4.5s and some 4.0 sixes, (and a 5.0 and a 6.3
) You'll find pros and cons to all three engines. the 4.5 can or many believe NEED to be tweaked to smooth out and raise the power delivery. Once they have this then the drivers love them.
Many 4.5s have been modified and you may want to consider this.
Tons of information in PH Look at some classifieds and them search the terms and words used on this forum to see what suits you sir.
On road performance is said to be virtually the same for both engines until you get up to nutty numbers.
If I can offer any real advise I would say that engine choice for the v8s is probably less important than car history, in terms of wallet sapping performance. Find out abou the car what has been done, what needs to be done and importantly what might need to be done in the near future. I got 'a sorted' car 7 months ago and that has still cost me a few grand to update and keep on the road.

Just echoing the sentimaents here. I have driven both but own a four-two.
The 4.5 lacked something down low (I'm told this is sortable with a short induction kit and some remapping) but delivered the torque in a massive great lump around the middle of the rev band. The 4.2 is more free revving and IMO picks up better from lower revs. Either can be made to sound however you want them to. Mine is H&S decat, hit just under 130 decebels at peak revs and spits 2foot flames out when you lift off (and boy does it pop and bang like a good un!). It's probably too loud, infact it's mental. I'll probably tone it down someday and I can't track it on any metered tracks at the mo unless I gets myself some very good silencers.... BUT I love her and you'd have to show me a VERY sorted 4.5 for me to agree to swap.

i have to agree with the above comments whether its a 4.2 or a 4.5 is not the main issue for you the rest of the details are probably more important i.e the history of the car has it been well looked after, serviced on time etc etc as long as its a straight car and in good order you can make it sound how you like later. i personally think mine is loud enough in standard form judging how it makes people standing at the back of it jump when she fires up, but we all have our own personal choices on things thats what makes the world an interesting place, good look in your quest and when you get one im sure you wont be dissappointed.

Absolutely agree with this.
One further point, if you get a post 99 4.2, it has actually got a 4.5 block , but with the 4.2 induction system. Apparantly the factory couldnt source the 4.2 block from this date, so ended up shoving the 4.5 block in instead (info from Dave at Automedon, and Paul & Heath at the factory service dept -so I wont argue that its correct & reliable info). The 4.2 does rev hard, and mine spits & snorts when you back off --in a BIG way! (lovely for frightening pedestrians & lycra clad cycle louts -
). I guess this model would perhaps be the best of both worlds for what your looking for?

I dont want to dissapoint you,but you would never be able to get it in to the states. It doesnt meet type approval and emissions. Do you think the 4.5 is just a better car and a better performer than the 4.2 or are there only small differences of the two.

But there is a TVR car club USA...... Is it just Cerberas that aren't allowed? What about those stupid 30-something-litre pickup trucks and 8 litre "family sedans" they have.

Cant remember the exact date. But early eighties i think was the last time you could bring a new TVR in to the states. Then they impossed stringent safety levels which TVR couldnt meet.I think you can bring one in and use it for 6 months on UK plates, with the intention of it going back out again. But when it comes to register it in the U.S thats when you will encounter problems.LR launched the NAS 90-110 back in to the states over the 94-95 period. The following year new regulations were brought out regarding duel airbags and dash board changes.LR deemed it not viable to make the changes,on what was essentially a limited run,so stopped the export of them.Funnily enough they are highly prized in the states, where one recently sold for $88,000 at a Barret Jackson auction on a 94 model. It would be nice to have seen what some of the later TVR would make if they had a limited run in the states.Im sure some one else will be along with more knowledge on import regs in to the U.S

I'm not sure I believe him either - but 27 US dealers did, so did Japanese, Chinese and Singapore dealers, and European dealers have committed to taking 4000 units in 2008. The new engine by the way will be a Speed 6 with Twni Cams, Vtec and Bosch fuel systems.
I dont want to get in to the whole whats happening with TVR debate because i find the whole thing boring. But since october last year i havent seen a lot happening from TVR apart from a lot of hot air about what will be.I will believe it when i see it.But to be honest cant see another TVR being made in any shape or form.Unless he sell the name back to some intrested UK individual or party. No nor do I !! But as it happens that isn't speculation, it's the words of Adam Burdette from TVR. who have just recently signed contracts with Bertone, Ricardo, I.M, Hi-Tech Automotive and G&K Automotive, so maybe something is happened. And he is employed by NS, so he is hardly likely to be a liar is he?

Just picking up on the mention of Bertone.Over in the General TVR forum, there is a thread going on that Bertone is on the verge of going to the wall. Thanks for the information guys, and I appreciate the multiple responses.
The additional information that I can tell you is that I do live in the united states and I am aware of the deal happening with Adam Burdette and Michel Santacreu. According to there word TVR's will start showing up in U.S show rooms in the beginning of 2008. I do understand that this will only cover the Sagaris,Tuscan ,and T350.( No Cerbs). BUT I do have a chance with getting my hands on a Cerbera. I don't want to turn this topic into a "TVR in the US" forum because I agree it can get crazy with all the different opinions and no solution ever come abouts.
To make a long story short I know a gentleman who business is finding exotics and he said with confidence that he can find me a TVR Cerbera 4.5 and bring it to the states. I no what your thinking and I thought the same thing when I first heard the information, but I am cooperating with this business and awaiting on what they find for me.
My main concern is that IF this really happens and I have a chance to drive a Cerbera in the States. Can I properly maintain the vehicle and if needed get parts for the car either in the UK or US. I don't know if this is true but I was told that some of the parts in the cerbera are common in other vehicle makes.(basic maintenance).
What do you guys think?
Thanks

At some point you will need specialist maintainance. So i think ownership could be a pain.I still cant see how you would be able to use the car stateside with the regulations impossed on them.In the meantime why dont you book yourself a holiday over this side of the pond and have a ride in a few.Im sure a few on here wouldnt mind helping you outThe additional information that I can tell you is that I do live in the united states and I am aware of the deal happening with Adam Burdette and Michel Santacreu. I suggest that you check out www.rennlist.com. There are many Porsche owners who bring in their cars from Europe and have one hell of a job getting them 'Federalised', so that they can be legally registered in the US. I doubt that a current TVR would get through any of the tests.
www.tvrfreak.com - hopefully that still works!
