There are no mods for the 4.2 engine, just get it set up correctly and you will have a cracking engine.

True, seemingly no real "subtle" mods... which of course just leaves the more hardcore options of :

a) Nitrous
b) Supercharger.

NO MODS, NOT TRUE!

Have a look at the old threads, Andy MCG of APM had c. 380 bhp out of my 4.2 verified at Surrey Rolling Road in the right gear!

4.5 manifolds, reworked head etc.. it was brilliant, watch the springs though they are not man enough to close the throttle at full tilt and the air flow can keep the butterflies open.

Give APM a call if you want some additional performance without buying a new 4.5.

It is dependant on the condition of the rest of the engine however.

Might be worth looking at the ACT equal length manifolds for the AJP as a way to pick up some torque.

There's a 4.2 in the classifieds claiming "380 bhp"

Is that the same car ?

Interesting Johnny, already using APM now so I shall speak to Andy myself about getting a bit more out of the old girl, however mine fresh from a previous fettle when I first got it gave a 365 at SRR anyway and with no mods that I am aware of, so only really talking 15bhp. Do keep talking about Nitrous with him though... just worried about making it uninsurable. Have heard that the supercharger conversions on the Rover's are not really making a huge difference to insurance so wonder if this is a more sensible insurer friendly route, seems odd but that's insurance companies for you. Would definitely recommend APM, although as you are in Essex it might be a hike, Austec another recommended option.
