can of worms - 4.5 or 4.2?
Discussion
Ive had both, dont assume the 4.5 is a quicker car,to be honest i think my 4.2 was quicker 0-70, BUT the biggest difference with the 4.5 is when you put your foot down it pulls like a train & it dont stop till YOU S**T OUT!!!Thats my personal opinion, others may say different!

The 4.5 isnt neccesarily 60bhp more, as most/all 4.5 cars are no where near the 420 mark as quoted. However, the 4.5 can be tweeked/remapped more than the 4.2. As for the difference on the road...theres not a lot to choose between them. Both have slightly different characteristics. I would go for a 'sorted' car, whether 4.2 or 4.5.
Early 4.2's had problems with over hot cams and big bangs. 4.5's seem more reliable - but neithet of the two I had really started to fly until they'd done about 40,000 miles. Don't know if that was sorted or just run in. My last one's up for sale at Peninsula just now and although I love my new Sagaris to bits there are things about the Cerb that I miss...

what makes the better noise? 4.2's and 4.5's both make awesome noise with the right exhaust set up...
service intervals etc the same?...
...6000 and 12000 miles are suggested service intervals, but most ownwers have theirs done at least once a year, irrespective of mileage

The 4.5 seems to dump all the torque in one blob, and needs a lot more "feathering" of the throttle.
That said, with A remap, I'm expecting the 4.5 to improve.
I haven't weighed them both yet, but I reckon the old 4.2 is going to be lighter than the 4.5 "lightweight"
If they were both the same price, I'd pick the 4.5, for the fact that it's "possible" to make the extra HP, plus for bragging rights down the pub.
If I were asked to pay a premium for the 4.5, it wouldn't be a lot.

Based on my limited experience, a standard 4.2 gets it's nose in front of a standard 4.5 and stays there on normal roads/traffic light Grand Prix's. I'm not convinced that the factory didn't make up the 0-60 figures for the 4.5 just because it had to be quicker than the 4.2.
My 4.2 is also unbelievably easy to drive and since it's been serviced pulls easily and cleanly from just over 2k revs even in 5th.
BUT
If power is your thing then it's the 4.5. The 4.2 is just that, you leave it alone and enjoy. The 4.5 is easily tunable and cheap to release lots of horses bearing in mind that a standard 4.5 is probably around 360-380bhp.
