Have just come back from brands hatch and got my Cerb tested for the forth comming track day evening.

The car is a standard engined 4.5 with standard back box, but with a set of linked decats.

Readings were 95Db one side and 100Db the other at 4000rpm (his choice). He said he'd let it through but only just. (98's the limit)

He was looking at the rev counter through the rear screen. Didn't see where he put the nozzle (oooh eeerr).

Thought that might help some of you.

If anyone's wondering why the difference its because without load the left side was popping and banging more than the left (his words)

I'm sure they're supposed to measure from the middle when a vehicle has more than one exhaust pipe. Presumably you were doing the full GP circuit if it was only 98dB?

I thought the norm was 1 metre away and at 45 degrees angle, with engine @ 4000rpm...maybe central and a metre away would be 45 degrees roughly...

Think 98 applies to evening events as well regardless. Couldn't really tell where the probe was as I was in the car trying to keep it at 4000

Castle Coombe measured at 0.5m away. I kept my hand on the steering wheel so he couldn't see the rev counter

Abingdon tomorrow want 3/4 revs - so 5000-5500? Sod that I'll cheat again.

98dB?!

FFS, I think we'll all struggle to match that.

I'll contact Brands tomorrow and find out what the figure will be, because if it's 98 I'll cancel and do a day later in the year.

No it's 102 or 103 in the evenings on the indy circuit, 105 in the daytimes. Hold on there is a link somewhere to where it says it.

Got it, Nicky rang up and was told 102db

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=13&t=381752&i=80

then found it on there website here :

www.motorsportvision.co.uk/trackdays/trackdaytermsbh_c.asp

Deffo no mention of 98 anywhere so think he was getting himself confuddled. Still going to be hard though, I have just been and bought and had fitted an SP backbox and still not going to be under that if the reading we did after is anything to go by cry

Definately 102 dB for the evenings. I checked and double checked when I rang them and booked. I think that the information on the booking stuff we were sent has not been updated though, but their website is correct according to BH.

You could try revving a bit higher as you may have hit a bad resolution at 4k. I had this the other week at Brands, at 4K the reading was 110db at 5-6K it went down to 100db. Admittedly it was a smaller engine to the type you would be testing but it's worth a try. Also make sure the engine is hot.

Ooh that's interesting, am trying to get access to a meter before hand so I can have a little play. Mine just seems to pop and bang as all the time, so probably spikes the meter and game over.

LoL, I've just checked and the Confirmation Details that were supplied with my order clearly state 105dB so THAT is what I will work towards.

Surely they cannot move the goalposts once they have your money.

Tim

Oh, and if they're quoting MSA regs then they should be adhering to the testing procedures too. and ALL Cerb's redline at 6,000 - just remember that!

So is the SP exhaust with linked decats as quiet as a standard backbox with linked decats?
I was led to believe it is. I want to replace my sports pipes with a decat pipe and a proper
backbox. I wanted the SP but am not as interested if it isn't nice and quiet (I must be old).
