Hi,

My steering wheel buttons seem to 'get their wires crossed' as when i use the wiper buttons, every once in a while the main beams flash and sometimes when i press the main beam button, the wipers start up. the horn, thank goodness, seems to be unaffected.

So, i ordered a new ribbon cable as i have been advised that this is the problem. the new one arrived a couple of days ago and i decided to replace it yesterday. well, the new one is long, i mean massively long, like, well, long... anyways, the cable from the steering wheel to the next end (which is a little pcb board that is mounted above the steering column with a ring mounted on the steering colum going through a sensor on the board) is only about 3 feet, if that.

am i looking at the wrong cable? or is this car different?

thanks

It sounds to me like you ordered what you [i]thought[i] you needed, ie the little cable that goes from under the steering wheel to the PCB board, but they sent you the wrong one !
But don't worry, they have sent you what you really need, ie the 10ft long cable that sits inside the steering wheel hub smile - This is the cable that usually causes problems with the buttons.
Prise off the Steering wheel centre hub, undo the big nut in the centre, and pull the wheel off. Make a careful note note of how the cable is attached inside, then disconnect it at both ends and then reconnect exactly the same way, and re-assemble.

this is what i did, tell me if its wrong....

undo the 6 allen bolts in the aluminum center ring at which point the steering wheel came off in my hand and i noticed there were a pair of black wires running to each of the buttons and onto a little pcb board in the middle of the metal mounting bracket; no sign of any ribbon cable. so i looked under the lower intrument pod and found the other end of this pcb board which had the 3 foot cable attached to it. at this point i decided the new cable was wrong cause i could not find a long cable anywhere (granted i didn't look to long as my son was climbing all over me to 'drive' the car and push all the buttons.

Te long cable lives inside the top of the steering column and its that long so it can coil up and allow you to turn.

Next to the little pcb under the 6 allen bolts is a large bolt (17mm I think) you need to undo this and remove the white boss that the steering wheel was fixed to (with the allen bolts). You will probably have to bolt the wheel back on to allow you to pull the boss of as its usually very tight. Once you have removed the boss behind it is an aluminium plate that covers the long ribbon cable. Lift off the plate and you will see your cable all coiled up, this is what you need to replace. Only thing is make sure you put the wheel back on with enough slack in the cable, it will only allow about 3 1/2 turns before destroying itself so you need to spend a little time making sure you get this right.

To replace the ribbon cable you only need to undo the One big bolt (17mm socket) behind the TVR badge in the centre of the wheel. Then the wheel pulls off. Get it all coiled up nice and tight inside the wheel, with the other end connected to the steering wheel housing (fiddly) put the wheel back on straight, then before you tighten it, wind the wheel round to tighten up the ribbon cable, when it just starts to feel tight, wind the wheel back about 3 turns, o give some slack (as mentioned above) and then tighten it.

all done... thanks for the help guys. the old cable was 'jammed' in between the steering wheel and the housing and had a few of the wires in the cable exposed. i'll cut that inch or so off and re-crimp the end on and have a spare for the next time.

now on to the wiper park switch.... from what i gather, its fun job...

that wiper park switch.... not a fun job... about 2 hours and a few cuts. made me chuckle a bit, had the car switched on (not running) so i could listen to the radio, get the old switch out and the wipers started going... made me jump and it took a few minutes before i realized what had happened.
