Had an interesting straight line drag with an EVO at the weekend, on a private road naturally. Anyway, i started out in front but couldn't pull away, i was doing about 140 when the suspension felt very tired hitting a bend, so i sensibly backed off, much to the delight of the EVO, who could be seen charging ahead with huge cackling flames spitting out of his dustbin size exhaust. I think it was an FQ340 (mine is dynoed at 360 bhp), so no doubt the EVO is quick, but i thought the weight difference would have helped me out more. Still know which car i would prefer to be in though biggrin

Shocking behaviour hehe There are a few modified Evo's around this neck of the woods though with some serious amount of power. Like you say though I know which I'd rather be in.

Maybe he was just a nutter that would rather have come off the road and killed himself than be outdone. You know, my heads so big I haven't got room for a brain.

I think it's sensible to back off if you're not certain of the outcome of the actions your about to take.

There again, he might have had one sorted EVO, after all they are flamin quick!

Sensible is not to get involved.

4 wheel drive, greasy, slippery roads and probably tweaked as few remain standard. No wonder it was playful as thats entirely the conditions it was designed for.

very sensible to have let him go not worth killing yourself wer,e only this way once so we need to hang onto it, you live to race another day but you still came out on top because you have the privelage of driving a hand built beast not some mass produced japanese car that you see hundreds of everyday

I'm not sure why you think the road i was on was greasy or slippery, as the conditions were excellent, and it was more or less a straight line blatt. I have no desire to lock horns with a superior handling car. It’s just a case of knowing ones limitations, whilst eeking out a spot of fun… after all I might have been on an Autobahn wink

The autobahn isn't a private road... as you earlier stated smile
I've seen some loony Subarus in France, but not that many totally crazy Evos

I'd expect at the start the Evo will get an initial lead with the additional grip but that advantage to be soon clawed back.

FQ340 is 1400Kg kerb weight with approx 345bhp, 320ft/lbs torque. 0-60 is approx 4.3 secs, tops speed around 155mph. In good conditions it would be close to start with but the Cerbera should leave the Evo behind, especially towards it's top end when the Evo starts getting asthmatic.

Hence why I assumed greasy along with the Uk weather over the last few days and the mention of a bend? I find airfields/perimeter tracks quite slippery when wet smile

Interesting about the flames. Was this when changing gear/accererating or on slowdown/engine braking? If accererating then that's been played with as it must be heavily overfueling at full throttle?

My son works for Mitsubushi. The only Evo's I've ever been worried by were the full on FQ400, but they're so harsh on clutch control that no-one likes them to drive and drops down to the FQ340. I've upset a few of his collegues with their works cars smile

Evos are so easy to make go faster that there are an awful lot with a lot more power than the boot badge would have you believe. Our next door neighbours (WRC Technologies) convert a lot of FQ340s to 400 bhp (and that's without changing turbos or internals - otherwise 550+!!) which makes it more responsive but as quick as an FQ400.

The only way to be sure to beat these machines is to go for the 170+ lepton range - which is not adviseable - or simply let them go by and enjoy the admiring looks you're getting from those around you, then contrast with the looks the Evo driver's getting wink

Again, on a private road, I had a play with a Ferrari 355 and we were fairly evenly matched so I was quite chuffed. About a week later, on said road, I had a little do with a MR FQ340 and was slightly surprised that the 2 ltr, 4door saloon car was just as quick. Mad.

Hum - I'm pitched against a 355 on fighting torque

Good point about the flames, he must have backed off once he'd got a decent lead after I’d slowed right down… looking for a suitable hole in the ground that i could hide in paperbag

TBH, i'd already identified that my shocks need changing, the rears have been bottoming out on the country roads, so i wasn't too surprised at the twitchiness on seemingly minor undulations.

There’s more EVO’s round here than you can shake a stick at, all of them seem to be driven by complete nutters too!

355 CAN'T have been stock then (or Stevie wasn't trying wink)

A mate used to have a 355 Spyder with a Groupe-M ECU & a very special (LOUD) Japanese race exhaust, so was pushing out an estimated 400bhp. In a straight line, I would still out gun him (with far better fireworks on the over-run hehe). Through the corners was another matter boxedin, but Fighting Torque is a straight line blast biggrin

Had a similar situation this weekend, not sure which evo although it was an 04 reg with a modified exhaust. He was right up my backside until I got into 3rd gear where the cerb had the legs on his car definatly pulling away, however in the bends and round abouts he kept reeled me back in.

Stevie Mojo has a chim 500, a 355 wont be a problem for a Cerb in a straight line... add a few corners and its a little harder, but the Cerb still should show it a clean set of toyos (from experience at hillclimbs/sprints, the 355 challenge used to beat us a fair bit though, but dad wasnt as quick then.)

I had a nice little race with an EVO VIII FQ340 at Brands the other week.

I was on him all the way round, he did get out of the corners quick, but then I was soon on him.
He had to let me pass in the end, he was defo holding me up, but as I passed the chequered flag came out so didn't see how quick I could pull away. smile
