New mounting bushings for AVO shocks
Discussion
The bushings on the AVO shocks on my car are knackered.
They have deformed and don't fit properly any more.
I'm planning to fit poly-bushes to the suspension and that would be a good time to change the shock ones as well.
Two questions .....
1 - where can I get new shock bushings for the AVO's?
2 - are they all this bad or do the new ones fit properly and hold their shape?

Sorry I don't know where to get new bushes, but when I had Avo's on a kit car they went out of shape pretty fast (within a 1000 miles). They were rubbish banging and clattering over any bump, they went that bad they made the bottom ring of the shocker bottom out on the suspension arm plate underneath it.
If I was you I would go for rose joints rather than poly bushes as these tend to fail again over just a few miles. I've just put these on mine, cost £65 inc postage from AVO themselves. I also had to get a set of spacers to replace the various washers, LEVEN supplied these. Car feels MUCH better now.

I wonder would it be possible to have an engineering shop make some on a lathe?
The "poly" is polyurethane, isn't it?
The poly is polyurethane, but I thought they were moulded into the desired shape and it's too soft to be machined. The "poly" is polyurethane, isn't it?
Model engineering places, like Chronos, sell bearing nylon. It machines beutifully, but I dont know if it could take the shock loadings a shock absorber bush is subjected to, Maybe someone else knows better.
About rose joints/spherical bearings in place of bushes, do they not make the suspension rattle or too hard over bumps because theres no give in them, as there would be in a bush?
I've only fitted the rear rose-joints to be honest and have not noticed any negative effects, the car actually feels a lot "tighter" overall. I've also spoken to LEVEN and they actually spec ALL of their AVOs now with Rose-Joints now and never use the poly bushes - thats good enough for me!

What are the rose joint ones like?
As in, how do the fit, etc?
Any pics so I know what I'm talking about when I ring them?
Basically they are like a ball bearing with a hole in the middle that sits in a kind of donut of steel and can turn and rotate in any dircetion. When you take the poly pushes out you push the rose joint unit in the gap with a circlip each side to stop it coming out. As you put the shocks back on the car they fit just like before but can twist and turn as needed. I'll take come pics tonight and try and post them up for you. As in, how do the fit, etc?

My Pro-Tech shocks i have fitted to the rear of mine have rose bushes in as standard, If you look at the drop links from the rear anti rollbar they have rose bushes on. One of my drop link rose bushes popped out on the dyno as it was worn excessively, it made a right racket when going up the road, put new ones on and it has quitened the ride up significantly over the worn ones. Not dear either.

Interesting as I'm about to sort all my suspension out. Can you get these for other makes of shocks?
The shocks need to be manufactured to take them as you need grooves to take the circlips to hold the rose joints in. Best speak to the manufacturer really.I'll have to take off a shock and have a look.

Best speak to the manufacturer really. Most of the shock manufacturers offer bearing joints but needless to say that you only get what you pay for and shocks under £100 are hardly likely to have aircraft quality bearings and are going to want replacing more frequently.
This is why I tend to stick to metalastic bushes on road cars because I know they are good for 5 years or so.
