What's the general opinion on the revs with these. They seem a little short legged and I feel I'm trying to get too much out of them before getting to 3rd. They don't seem to want to propel the car that much in these gears. I suppose I should look in my hand book for revs in each gear, which I shall but I'd be interested to hear some opinions (nearly wrote onions then !).

The engine revs to around the 7k mark in all the gears (if you really want to) I don't know what you mean by "they don't seem to propel the car quickly"! Hard acceleration in 1st and 2nd will leave tyre tracks and take you into the beginning of next week!

Well, we have not had her for long (4 weeks) and still getting use to her but I have to say I get a good punch in 1st and 2nd. Get to 3rd though and this is where the REALLY MAGIC BEGINS!
I must say, not sure why you don't feel propeled. However, I was afraid to give it some right foot at first. Getting there!

I know what you mean about 1st. It seems to run out of steam before you get anywhere. However, it's usually a case of not looking at the speedo whilst you're getting there. If you actually watch the speedo, you'll find that you hit 40 in 1st in about 2 or 3 seconds, if you floor it when the engine is fully warmed. I'm not sure about 2nd though, maybe your not heavy enough with the right foot. Floor it again in second from this point and 80 pops up in about another 3 or 4 secs. Bang it into 3rd and you should be flying.

I've always found that 1st gear in most cars is pretty crap. I've always taken it forgranted that 1st is for getting going and the other gears are for having the fun... thumbup

Well not being funny but precisely that. I shouldn't think all the cars drive exactly the same and lets face it mine is 10 years old - perhaps I should have mentioned that. It also has had two rather large conical carbon inductors put on which is not standard and it has been chipped (not by me) but as I say I am rather suprised by the lack of urgency in second gear especially with that lot. I thought I was flooring it but maybe not hard enough. Perhaps I'm still getting used to the long travel of the pedal.. in which case apologies for wasting time. I shall experiment on :-)

Don't worry, your not wasting anyone's time, It's a car you have to get used to smile The accelerator does have a huge amount of travel, push it all the way down when the engine isn't running to find out, and then compare that with what you have been doing.
Those non-standard air filters you describe are usually just good for creating a lot of induction roar, they don't really do a lot for performance.(apparently)

I find that mine is geared to about the following at 7,000rpm

1st - 40
2nd - 75
3rd - 110
4th - 140
5th - 185

Agreed with the comments already made, kicking the throttle to the floor in 1st or 2nd should give you an almighty thump in the back, possibly some rear end wriggle / snap and everything should go interstellar within a few brief moments. It took me a few weeks to remember to get the pedal all the way to the floor as I'd been used to an Alfa Romeo with only a couple of inches of travel.

You sure it wasn't a bit damp & 1st & 2nd were just lighting up the tyres? My car feels extremely urgent & violent all the way until I get scared of losing my license

Thanks for all those replies so far folks. Given me some food for thought. I shall try a little more pedal travel next time. Incidently.. Anyone any advice on how I get to my air filters to check if they're not clogged up and also I want to clean the front air intake properly by removing it . I've done my best to remove ten years worth of oily dust and dirt surrounding the inside :-).

Yes I've heard that too. I'm not a great one for too much modding anyway. To be honest I could do without them as they are noisey buggers, although they look very Dukes Of Hazard. May look into that.

Mr M, if you have two cone air filters don't worry about cleaning the front ait intake as it's not connected to anything.
