I'm about to start the long process if improving my car's hopeless B-road handling. Thoughts I'd start with the tyre pressures. I have new Toyos in 18in spider rims. Can anyone recommend sensible pressures for general road use. I've seen people talk about pressures right down to the low 20s. This seems so low compared with the 30 to 34psi I'm used to in my other cars.

i've got 22/24 front and 24 rear and it seems pretty good. People would only go lower to 20's for the track as the heat in the tyres brings the pressure back up.

I could be wring...but mine handles well at these pressures

That sounds like what I use. Can't remember exactly off the top of my head, but its definitely under 25.

Thanks chaps, I've just checked the pressures and the tyre guy has set them all at 32psi. Dropped it to 24 all round and instant improvement, especially bump steer.

remember also to get your own gauge, they're only cheap, don't trust the dodgy petrol station gauges!

I use 26psi on the rear of my Chim with 18" wheels. I find that when cornering under power the rim thuds the road when i hit any bumps!!!! Is this a Toyo thing; soft sidewalls taking a walk off the rim, or just a low profile issue?

Jon.

Have to agree with the other majority here, I run 24 all the way round on the TR-1 's on my tamora and there fine, tried higher but didn't feel right.

Plus driving to the petrol station means you are measuring the tyres warm. Need to do from cold.

i have heard it said it is a toyo thing, that the sidewalls show signs of wear after a trackday (I think it was the EVO owners who complained of this). Never had any problems with toyos on my last cerb though.

So by how much about does the pressure change on 18inch Toyos when the tyre pressure rises from cold to working temperature during fast road use?

Regards
Simon

I use R888 on my sag and no signs of tyre walls being worn or damaged after two track days. I do know the R888's are alot stiffer in the side wall, so can only comment on them.
