Peter,

Best way to check it is to park it on level ground.
Remove the dip stick.
Leave for a few hours to let the engine cool right down and dip-stick tube clear of oil (Overnight is best bet).
Then re-insert the dip stick fully, twist once and then remove.

This should give you an accurate reading.

Jules.

I found best method:
car parked level
ensure cold (eg first thing in the morning)
Remove dip stick, wipe and re-insert.
Push in BUT dont twist final bit.
pull out.
I always did this 4 or 5 times each time to be absolutely sure and would check both sides of dipstick.
Ensure oil is at max.
Check every week or 2nd or 3rd drive if using regularly.

Sorry to dredge up an old topic - but - whilst I keep a close eye on the oil... I've noticed that there's a marked difference between the two "sides" or "faces" of the dipstick, with one side reading maybe 1/4 ro 1/3 of an inch higher, consistently.

Is this just due to the layout or design of the engine? ie. The angles or how it enters the oil reservoir?

Anyone else have the same?

Phil.

My dipstick only has the markings on one side so I never have the problem. As for the angle the dipstick goes into the oil, its relatively verticle, so wouldnt be an issue. My dipstick is at the back.

Sorry. Misread. Agree with Gazzab. I leave my dipstick out overnite and I only really get a good reading on one side.

Dont think you are saying you have the marking on both sides. Just that the readings are different on both sides. Think they all do that (or it is very common). I would aim to have the oil up to the marking on the side with markings. The fact that it might ba a little lower or higher on the other side wouldnt concern me.

I only ever get a clear reading on the opposite side to the markings. If the car is cold and on the level, I find leaving the stick out for 10 minutes is enough. And as somebody else says, don't twist but make sure you push fully home before taking your reading.

Indeed - it's not about the marking, but the line left by the oil (as you suggested Gary)... good to hear it's not uncommon, and the start of something monumental! eek

I've been playing on the "safe side"... so all reassuring to hear!

Thanks as always!!!

Phil.

p.s. Garry - still got my Golf - couldn't part with her in the end! Sucker I know
