Well thought I had a dodgy big fuse so set about changing it, in the process of taking the top shroudy bit off I managed to flip the yellow (?) cap off of the brake reservoir, which has in turn revealed a plunger type item - for the life of me I cannot spot the cap anywhere. Now I am assuming the plunger is just a low brake fluid device, when low it hits the contact at the bottom and voila a little light comes on somewhere - so am I ok just to gaffer tape over the top of this (ensuring I don't press the plunger down), until I can find an alternative?

Annoyingly big fuse looks perfect but lots of water on rear coil pack which was probably the culprit of bouncing revcounter - this has been dried and WD40'd to within an inch of it's life.

The plunger thingy is for those sophisticated cars that have low brake fluid warning lights - bit of cling film and gaffer tape should be OK as a temp measure.

Brake fluid is corrosive, highly flammable and generally very nasty stuff to get anywhere at all let alone around your engine bay. I'd advise against driving it until you can replace the cap unless you're *very* confident that your makeshift cap will give you a perfect seal.

Hmmn good point but it's not the main cap (i.e that you would remove for refilling) more a thin lid which reveals this plunger and an electrical contact bit, I am not sure if the fluid can actually get out past the plunger stem, certainly no evidence of fluid in this section, but will have a good look to make sure...... off for a more intense look for the lid bit anyway as it is really bugging me as to where it has gone now.

No still no luck, have however liberated a perfect size circular rubber foot from bottom of a table mat (No darling I have no idea where it has gone ) which seals it rather nicely and even looked very neat.. until that is I also then covered it in copious gaffer tape for good measure biggrin

Just off for a drive to see if I still have bouncy bouncy revcounter which was the original ailment rolleyes.

No I was removing the top cover and as I lifted it, it flipped off the aforementioned lid.

Just went and took the yellow cap off mine and it seems perfectly dry inside so I don't think there's any worry of fluid loss, but I did notice that the cap is convex so if you use a flat disk it might make the plunger give a false reading.
My money says it's sat on top of the bell housing smile
