I took a trip over to MadMarks on Thursday afternoon.16 miles of start/stop traffic from Downham S.E London to Romford. On reaching Marks i turned the car off to find that when i restarted nothing.Just clicking from the starter. My first thought was that with the heavy traffic and the heat the solenoid in the starter had fried. But next morning Mark started it right away.Am i looking at another new starter or was it just down to the exessive heat and heavy traffic? This is the second starter in 2 years with the current one being supplied and fitted bu Austecs 10 months ago.

Don't the starter motors come with 12 warranty?
(Sure I read that on here)
If thats the case shouldn't they fit you a new one?

Most of the starters come with 12 months warranty. I had to replace my one last time home. The starter on mine was about nine months old. I used an old recipet from the previous owner and they sent me a new one out no questions asked smile There pretty awkward to fit. I have a 4.2. I removed the fuel rails and throttle linkage and just managed to squeeze the old one out and the new one in.

Spoke to MadMark tonight, and he said that he,s started it 2-3 times over the wkend and its started every time.May be it was down to the exessive heat after crawling for 16 miles and barely getting out of first gear.I will dig the bill out later and ring Austecs in the morning to see what the position is.Im a bit reluctant to have the car looked at now this close to fighting torque.Every time ive left my car there, its been gone for weeks.

I had the same problem as a one off about 2 months ago after sitting in heavy traffic but it's never happened again and have sat in traffic plenty of times since. Maybe it was a one off???

I've had intermittent trouble with my starter almost ever since I bought the car. At first I removed the started checked it out and it seemed all ok. After refitting it all seemed fine for a while but now seems only to fail when it's most embarrassing. Petrol forecourts and Car shows etc. However, all I do is stick it in gear and rock the car and "hey presto" it works fine. You really only need to "notch it" very slightly and it works. I assumed that perhaps the real problem is damage to the ring gear on the fly wheel not allowing the starter to properly engage. Last year when I fitted a new gearbox I did note that the ring gear was showing some wear on some teeth. Clearly the engine stops in the same two places as a rule. Perhaps I should have replaced the flywheel but at this stage my wallet was in meltdown. Anyhow for what it's worth I now occasionally have to rock the car, and it still only happens when it's really embarrassing. So if you want to save money and can handle the occasional embarrassing moment rock the car. If not, then I guess it's a new ring gear. Trouble is by the time the gearbox is out you start asking yourself, should I fit a new clutch while it's out? What about a clutch slave cylinder etc and the bills just mount up! Not sure if this helps but it may help to know your not the only one out there occasional rocking your car while young women point at you!
