Guys - any thoughts on this? It came on intermittently again yesterday for a minute or so a couple of times whilst cruising down the motorway then went out both times of its own accord - I've had this very occasionally in the past. It's had a new big fuse very recently - so I've eliminated that problem? It comes on fiarly dimly but definately is on. Waddya think -alternator output is ok too btw - diode pack on the way out perhaps? biggrin

The light indicates there's a voltage difference between the alternator field coils and the ignition feed. You need to know which one is changing and whether it's going up or down. You can find that easily enough with a voltmeter. It may be that the alternator output is going low (or high) or it may be that the ignition switched feed is dipping, which may be due to overload or a wiring fault or the battery not being charged sufficiently. So you need to find out what the voltage difference is and then track it back from there.
