You know what it’s like, you start thinking that you’ve done everything to your car and it can’t get any better.
Well as things sometime do, blowing the gearbox at Fighting Torque was it seems a blessing in disguise. It seems the gods of speed work in mysterious ways.
I already had the remote adjustable Ohlins, though Mat at Silverstone Performance had said we need to properly corner weight the car to extract the best setup, I think he had the guy from Ohlins over as well.
It was a few weeks until the gearbox was sorted, I contacted “the gearbox man” after reading about there upgraded T5.
The ratios except fourth and fifth are all changed, all the cogs are exchanged the gears are semi helical, oil mods are done and the fifth gear is enlarged, as in the standard T5 the fifth is an afterthought being halve the width of the other cogs.
I think it was Ben V8 Cerbera who posted the link to a carbon fibre prop shaft on eBay, luckily it didn’t generate much interest and I won the auction. Nice chap who sold it, he knew PW and had a few bits, there’s a cerb out there with Tuscan racer heads his old one.
Anyhow the prop shaft was dropped of to Mat and as just like that my Cerb was ready,
Corner weighed Ohlins set up gearbox and prop installed.
To say I was excited was an understatement, so wasted no time in getting off.
It was instantly apparent the new suspension and corner weighting had once again transformed the feel of the car.
We have all read the EVO write up. And whilst I didn’t agree with everything they said, the car did have a slight leaning towards under steer, nothing that couldn’t be driven around but it wasn’t right. The front wheels felt away from the chassis, you know just that little bit vague.
Well let me tell you it’s cured, what we found when setting Up the corner weighting was there was quite a bit too much weight over the back, this was remedied.
The feel is excellent, it finally feels as if there is a wheel at each corner; it’s massively predictable the back will push an inch then you have two choices. One feather the throttle and peel through the corner, or two, which is probably best reserved for tracdays, boot it and chuck in some lock then inside tyre unloads grip in a plume of tyre shredding smoke.
My car is sorted now handling wise, whilst cornering in a straight line or under breaking its rock solid.
Now the gearbox, it is quite obvious a fair bit of work has gone into this upgrade.
I did quite a bit of research before going to Bernie. T56 too heavy, plus mods to get it in.
Sequential, too expensive plus mods again.
I should not have worried; it couldn’t be better suited to the engine.
And if you think about it you’ll understand why.
The power is across the full rev range in each gear. You can hold second whereas before it would be thrashing now it’s in the meat of the power, it would have started to fall off before. There is a whine but it adds to the whole experience for me, when giving it some stick the extra noise is intoxicating.
Third is good for 130MPH and pulls real strong all the way to the limiter, I had the GPS stuff on board, it reads like this,
Obviously this was done on a closed road.
Accel results
Speed(mph) Time(s)
0-60 03.8
0-100 08.3
Accel Distance results
Distance() Time(s) @Speed(mph)
0-60' 02.2 34.1
0-1320' 12.0 118.4
0-2640' 20.6 101.3
0-5280' 41.7 78.8
The car is ballistic, and now finally sorted, I am off to the ‘ring this weekend and if the weather holds out well I intend to give it some stick
Thanks to Mat at SP I know how busy he is at the moment, but he still made time to set the car up, and you know what, he didn’t even charge me for it…..what can I say but thanks.
Oh nearly forgot the prop shaft, it’s obviously very sexy, well it is made of carbon fibre, but I guess you want to know how it feels, it spins up faster, just a little bit but you can notice it.

All sounds great stuff Nick .. is the box a dog clutch sequential ie can you flat upshift without lifting of the throttle or pressing the clutch?
Allright Jules,It's the old T5 with different internals, http://www.gearboxman.co.uk/infot5.html
They do a direct reeplacement for the T5 in sequential format, I will probably have a look at this as the next stage.
Ah just have, it's only rated for 270 BHP, right forget that idea.
Oh first is good for 62 MPH.

Jules,
don't be, I broke it. It was fifth that was lunched nothing else, I had a good look inside.
But if you do feel that bad, just send me a cheque for £1500.00.
Seriously, forget it, as I said I busted it.
Is that how much the modded box cost? I'm still looking for one for mine, I do have a 4.2 one but loathed to run it for any length of time.don't be, I broke it. It was fifth that was lunched nothing else, I had a good look inside.

Did you get the upgraded selectors too?

Good stuff Nick. I'll catch up at the weekend - well maybe not literally
