g ot the motor out ,found it in good order and the ring gear is ok too. cleaned it all up as it was a bit grubby and put it back and it still makes the noise then it will start, its almost as if the starter is trying to turn before the solonoid has had a chance to engage the gear.

Get a new one quick. Sounds like it is about to die and leave you bump starting it to get home.

Mine has been through that stage and is now at the solenoid clicking stage, I thought it was the battery but got a new one and it still doing the same. Just about to start to remove the fuel rail etc, any tips and are the bolts holding the motor on difficult!

Disconnect the battery
You do not need to take off the fuel rail, take off the last induction pipe if you have a 4.5 and disconnect the cross throttle shaft at the nearside end ( there is a little clip holding the ball joint on ). Take the fuel pressure regulator and pipe off the end of the fuel rail(2 allen bolts facing the bulkhead),BEWARE you will need to plug up the rail as petrol will piss all over the coil packs which are below. a 1/2"cork will suffice. Standing on the nearside of the car you will see two 8mm allen bolts holding the starter in,2x12" extension bars are needed and the socket. 1/2" drive is best for this ,when undone rotate the starter around to access the solenoid to remove the wires and un plug the smallwire from starter.Yes it will come out of the gap ,the first time took me two hours as all the jubilee clips on the induction were unaccessable so i had to take off all the induction system.by reorintating them the starter was out in twenty minutes start to finish. any more probs come back to me , goodluck

Cheers for the advice on the fuel rail. Got the starter out in about half hour. Mine's a 4.2 so I think the rail is wider and covers the access to the starter, but it came off pretty easy. Any way the starter is to be replaced and hopefully will go in as easy thumbup
