Work has finally started (delayed by Austec's move) and I had the chance to peek at the inside of the engine on Tuesday, not that I knew what I was looking at paperbag

David the engine builder (ex Aston Martin) looked at me very oddly (nothing new there hehe) when I kept asking what to him must have been stupid questions about what did what.

Anyway, it appears things arent quite as bad as they could have been. Need new pistons (these are slightly bigger than the originals so Im going to end up with something like 4555cc or somesuch and are a spare set made up for HarryW) and a top end rebuild? Something was said about pistons and picking up/pulling up skirts, which had me looking around for totty when they where actually talking about engines hehe

(Forgive my ignorance here, I may have some of this wrong) Upon disecting the engine Austec have discovered I have a steel crank (as opposed to a cast crank?), something Paul has only ever seen on one other engine (HarryW's engine as it goes), and steel? conrods? and something else (see I was paying attention? ). Paul said something along the lines of the fact I had the basics of a Tuscan Challenge engine inside (thats good I think)?

My car was originally owned by a multi millionaire (not that that makes any difference) friend of Peter Wheeler so I believe TVR used good parts for the car/engine intead of the usual chocolate shit. Even the 20k miles replacement clutch seems to be holding up fine.

Cant wait to get him back, especially so I can go back to Spa and do the cancelled trackday there, it looks bloody awesome! I hated having to chase the TVRs around the Ring (ooh err) last weekend in my Audi. Had a number of them in the twisties but couldnt get near them when the road opened up .

Will update when I have news smile

(cut & pasted from the TVRCC forum, coz Im a lazy bastard rolleyes)

I expect someone will be along soon to tell me steel cranks are common place and Im talking out of my arse again wink

The steel crank is a good find Fubes. I suspect you gained it by pot luck, rather than Wheeler making a special effort for his mates though. Any plans to take advantage of it with an interesting spec for the rebuild?

Well who'd have guessed itbiglaughwink

Once rebuilt you'll finally have the monster your car should always have been.........Hope it goes well and that the wait isn't too long.

Jules.

Not really Steve. There where options but Ive asked for it all to be put back as it was (ish...pistons excepted). You know Im not a good enough driver to make the most of a monster engine and not really into pissing competitions like some tongue outhehe

Good to see my old (rejected hehe) pistons have found a home wink.
Small world about the crank, did Dave/Paul say how many if any of the main caps are steel too confused, normal 'challenge engines' had the centre main cap in steel but with mine all three centre ones were steel.
I assume they checked the stroke and its not a long throw steel 4.7 reserved for 'Peter W's' race car hehe.
Best of Luck with the rebuild, I'd better get mine back up and post some final figures before it gets knocked off the board.

I,m a bit late on this. But what was the reason for the rebuild in the first place?

After years of abuse the AJP in this Cerb eventually heard the news that Fubes would not be accepting the Atkins Challenge as his new year resolution for 2008, so it threw in the towel to make way for a new stronger Torquemeister that will be man enough to do the deed.......hehe

Feck it, Im never gunna manage to get the LW thing going on, so may aswell get some horses up front smile

Was waiting for the pistons from the US, havent chased for a week or so. Saving my car repairs 'chasing' for the Audi. That's waiting for parts from Germany. rolleyes

Who said I was xenophobic? nuts

Nick how many miles is your car showing now?
This sound like what has happened to mine, slight tapping increases with revs.
Funny thing is the bottom end looks good, no signs of picking up or a spun shell bearing.
Compression is excelent and all valves spot on, my money is on left hand bank second pot from the back of engine, that's where it seemed to be coming from. I think the little end has been damaged in some way.If this is the case I wonder if there is room for some under piston oil spray bar.
Does anyone know if there would be room? Joo, Harry.anyone.
Will be getting a few mods done while the engine is out, well may aswell hey.

Nick, don't know exactly what Austecs improved design is on the pistons but improved under crown cooling is part of it, as is the skirt size, crown/swirl, mass and the pin angle.

confused I'm intrigued as to why Fubes is waiting on the USA for his pistons as mine were made by Woosner in Germany, must speak to Paul about that, perhaps it's version 4, with mine being version 3 or hopefully they just make them cheaper with the current exchange rate hehe.

No idea the reasoning behind it.

I think some of the Tuscan racers had this fitted. But I cant be 100% on it. I think Steve at Euphoria was doing it?????
