My brother has just bought a 99 S6 which seems particularly reluctant to engage reverse and it's quite difficult to get a smooth downchange although going up the box is fine. Would this be down to it being fitted with a close ratio box or is it a typical Cerbie foible ?

Grinding the gears when going for reverse is normal. Pre select a forward gear (some go for 5th, I tend to go for 3rd, but best to mix it up a bit so not to wear one particular gear) then it should slip into reverse without crunching smile

Thanks for the advice.

Took the car for a drive yesterday. Strewth, this is supposed to be the more civilised of the bunch? God only knows what a V8 is like because this is a beast of a car and fair play to anyone who contemplates driving one in the wet. That must be an interesting experience on public roads. It was just fabulous and there is a still a grin on my face just thinking about it. Mind you a tad too civilised for my liking but I'm sorely tempted.

Just buy one! Cant tell you how many PHers come on here gushing love for their new Cerbs and stating "Why didnt I buy one of these years ago?". Live life for today, dont waste time you will regret. BUY ONE! NOW!

PS Yellow is THE fastest colour wink

PPS Tell your bro to be VERY careful in the wet. They bite. HARD!

Orange is way faster especially when it comes to the twisty bits.
