I'm looking for a cerbera 4.5 and have cash waiting
My budget is to around £16500 and I want a good one.
Any advice on what to look for would be appreciated as while I'm very familiar with cars and engines in general I'm not a great TVR expert. I already know I dont want a speed 6 engined variant as I have better things to do than buy new engines every year! On balance I would prefer a 4.5 as if I buy a 4.2 I will always wish I'd gone for the bigger one as it's just in my nature!

Have noticed this one which seems to be a members car but the account no longer seems to exist so I cant find any info about it. Does anyone have any knowledge of this car?

Hi Jon, i would suggest you get it also inspected by an expert, or take it to a tvr specialist garage for inspection.

Light the blue touch paper and stand back.................

And wait for all the Speed 6 owners to jump on your case.

Even though I have a 4.5 - I've had both - there isnt really a lot of difference between them, in fact if anything the 4.2 feels a quicker car, engine seems to rev much quicker and the car feels like a lighter quicker car somehow. 4.5 has more tuning potentiol but you'll need to spend - anything up to £2.5k to get more horses than a 4.2.
Late model 4.2's are thought to be the best Cerb's produced. If you have £16.5 k to spend you need to keep £3k back for running costs for the year.

It's a sorted 4.5. Can't post a link here as it'll be binned, but email me through my profile for details smile

Thanks for the tips.

Running costs are not really the big problem for me, just don't want to end up with a lemon in the first place. What experts are out there that can perform an knowledgable inspection for me in the Oxford area. I think it's got to be worth a couple of hundred quid given the cost of fixing these cars if you get a wrong un.

Sorry, didnt want to upset the Speed 6 owners, just seen so many reports of trouble while doing my homework in here that I became nervous about them (cars that is not owners)! It seems the 8 pots are not only a tad more sturdy but more poke and cheaper to fix. Of course it's fair to say that people are always more inclined to post about the ones that go wrong rather than trouble free cars so maybe the S6 gets an unfair reputation. I'm just not about to risk my hard earned cash testing that theory. I have heard of AJP8's doing pretty high mileages between rebuilds.

I have heard also that there are chassis areas that should be checked carefully, anyone give me any pointers about where I need to take a good look?
Spotted a nice grif in the adds section but my wife might have a problem with the 2 seat factor as we have a little one who's desperate to go in dads new car when it arrives.

Rob Ingleby can help:

http://findasportscar.co.uk/

Alternatively, APM automotive in Liphook could inspect for you.

I've had both also and would say that the 4.5 is definitely the one to go for. I didn't really find the 4.2 quicker, but the way it delivers it's power is different. A simple remap will see the 4.5 jump well ahead of a 4.2 power wise, 380-390 v 330-350 (if it isn't already) and this costs around £600 or alternatively you can buy an off the shelf generic chip for just £300cool . Spend more and you will see the power gap grow even larger.

Both are great cars with the 4.2 still being the cheaper one to purchase. If you have your heart set on a 4.5 then stick with it. Use the advice you get on here and if you are not 100% confident with viewing the car on your own then get either a recommended expert as mentioned on here to help out, or see if one of the local to you PH'ers with a Cerb will be willing to help out.

Good Luck.

Jules.

I'm currently running both.

4.2 is definitely more "free revving" and gets you to the gear changes quicker.

4.5 seems to have a lot more torque, and is giving you a bigger kick up the arse as you get in the high rev band.

Unless you're doing track days with long straights, or are going to be doing regular 150mph plus autobahn runs, you'll be hard pressed to see the difference between the two engines.

If I was buying another, I wouldn't pay a premium for a 4.5.

EDA

However, it depends on how you're going to be using it smile

Can highly recommend Rob Ingleby - I used him to source my previous Chimaera 400 (sold after a year trouble-free motoring) and he inspected my recently-purchased Cerb 4.5.
Cerbera shopping is a good position to be in - enjoy!

Sorted!

Bought the Yellow lightweight from Phil Phedonos. So far it has got me back from london to oop north without missing a beat (170 miles) The fuel consumption was not as bad as I expected, half a tank (by the guage). Performance was exactly what I expected F21421g amazingly, trouser changingly, jowel flappingly brilliant.

Thanks for the tips, it was really appreciated and I'm confident I got a good one.

Yup, thats why I bought the lightweight. The 40Kg offset is just about right for me. Still scared to death of it and I just learned that braking hard while down changing is a bad idea.

Nice one Jon and welcome to the madhouse. Mr Phedonos is getting quite a (good) reputation, despite the interesting place he operates from smile
