OK, I'm half way through replacing the cabling to the starter motor. I undid the two bolts that hold the solanoid on and pulled it away from the starter body to be able to get at the terminals on the back, and this little green spring clip thing came away in my hand. I was working at fingertips so couldn't see a thing, and now have no idea whatsoever where it goes back. Can anyone help?

On the upsaide, I've got lots of nice new super-chunky cabling, and after a couple of hours with some solder and a brazing torch, I should be all good to start putting things back together...

it comes from the heat shield that sits on top of the solanoid.

Does it fit into the solanoid somehow? It seems that there are two little holes in the face of the solanoid that fit the "feet" of the clip (or is this a red herring?)
Didn't notice a heat shield...

it maybe that the heat shield part has been removed/fallen off and that all your left with is the clip. the heat shield on mine was removed when it came lose. the way the heat shield sits on top of the starter solaniod it keeps the heat in , so this is why mine was removed. hope this helps.

Finally got the bugger back together, and I've got the cuts and scrapes up my arms to prove it!

Being able to see what I was doing really really would have helped!

Turns out that the little clip *DOES* fit inside the solaniod housing. The trick (which I discovered after about an hour and a half of swearing), is to fit the spring-clip into the solanoid face (hopefully without distrubing the two gaskets (because they're a bugger to line up once they come off), and align the spline so that the little slot is in the up-down dimention as you hold the solanoid in its fitted orientation. Then, pull the little arm out from the housing (I used a small open spanner to "hook" it, then slipped the spanner body behind to hold it). Crucially (and this was the bit I was getting wrong for ages), the cross piece of the spring clip has to go over the arm *FIRST*, before you slip the arm into the solaiod spline. After that, a little wiggle (and possibly a squeeze of the two halves of the spring-clip), it should all slip back into place.

So all in all, a really simple task, made difficult by having no idea whatsoever how it goes (I did try and slip my camera in behind to get a shot, but it was too close up to get anything but blur).

Get to finish off tomorrow, after replacing the bolt that I dropped god-knows-where, cable-tying down all the new cabling, and finally reconnecting the battery. Fingers crossed!!

sorry for the bum info, it appears that you were on about a completely different "clip" to the open that i was on about.
