Hi all, I asked about this a while back, but my problem went away on its own so I didn't persue it.

But now its back, so I'll ask again if anyone has advice to offer.

My throttle is sticking open a bit; When I press the pedal then let go the revs drop to about 2,000 then stay there for a couple of secs then drop down to idle.

This couple of secs is enough to make me sound, to the casual observer, like a wan**r when I change gear.

It doesn't seem to be the cable, I squirted oil up it, and the end goes loose before the revs drop.

I've got an extra return spring fitted;

Last time someone suggested I loosen the butterflies and reset then. I did this, but it made no difference.

Any ideas where now, please?

Thanks!

Andy.

disconnect the throttle linkage and cable (engine side) and determine which side it is. maybe the linkage bar (that connects the butterflies) is sticking.

someone had this problem before and it was a faulty t-pot not giving the correct readings

My throttle cable snapped Friday on my way home from work. Right at the pedal. Anyway had to call the RAC. When he got the old cable out it had frayed quite badly inside the outer sheath. We're talking 3 inches in length! So it could still be catching inside the sheath.

Its a new cable I have, fitted a few months ago. There seems to be no friction in the cabe; I think the problem is elsewhere, but I'm not sure where!

Sounds like the throttle butterflies are just to far open when they are against the stop. Is your idle rpm up too?

No, the idle is just below 1000, havn't checked it with the PC yet, but its not unduly high.

But I would have though that the revs would stay up longer if the butterflies weren';t closing, but in fact it only stays up for a second or two, then drops. But its enough for the engine to race when up-changing.

cheers

Andy.

There's another spring located on the throttle pot rod (opposite end to the throttle pot). Mine broke last year and had to go back 3 times before it was found (after throttle pot changes and butterfly valve resetting, etc, etc). Similar symptoms with revs taking a while to drop. It always seemed fine after the work was done for about an hour. Seemed worse when really hot. Probably worth a check as it is an unusual item to break (I actually think the spring jammed and the garage broke it trying to get it out).

Hmm thanks for that, I checked but both springs look fine; In any case the big extra spring I have would probably pull the throttles closed if one of those had broken.

Unless of course one is jammed... I'll check when it's light!

Meanwhile any other pointers welcome!

Had the very same problem hitting a round-about and went sideways all the way round - engine breaking all the way home.

Butterflies were the answer, a quick 'clean' (whatever that means) and job done.

It was a bit like going to the doctors though, problem came and went before becoming permanent and thus off to the indie - didn't like the hit'n'miss of knowing if I was looking like a driving god/w@nker going around round-abouts dependant on the car feeling like it wanted to test me or not at any given time.

Seems like you may have looked at this issue - but I'd gone through several suppliers and have a ton of throttle return springs before it got sorted.

Hook it up to a laptop and rev up and down.

Look for spurious readings from the throttle pots - ie, one will go up steadily but the other may suddenly jump up/down a bit.

It may be that one/both of them is/are on its/their way out or sticking etc.

Also check that your throttle stop screw/bolt is done up nice and tight.
