Can any one help me regarding this?
It is insurance renewal time and some insurers are trying to tell me that the standard TVR alarm / immobiliser is not Thatcham approved, never have been, and some are saying that from 2000 onwards they are. The prices can differ by as much as £200 from the same insurance company. Any concrete advice on this would be appreciated. Mine is a 2003 model.
Thanks Andy

Carl Baker will be the best man to ask.

EDA

To my knowledge it's Thatcham cat 2.

Looking at a letter from TVR, albeit 1996, it would need boot & bonnet switches to make it cat 1

Pretty sure none of them are due to no bonnet sensor.

I was also under the impression that for Cat 1 approval, all the wires going to the immobiliser must be black. Now while its is strictly true that all the wires are black as they enter the box, 12" further down the lead, there's a multiplug with pairs of coloured wires, which kinda defeats the object of the excercise - it doesn't exactly take the brain of britain to work out how to bypass it. Can't imagine that Thatcham would give the installation the big thumbs up for a Cat1.

Well here's a thing, one insurance company says that if it is standard TVR supply it will be a "Meta System type Aquila Microwave" from 2000 onwards "every body Knows that" and "it is approved". The other insurance company says they have checked the Thatcham list and TVR is not on it as having supplied any CAT 1 systems. Both companies i have contacted are out of the Sprint Magazine. My dilema is that the least expensive is £100 less than the other but does't recognise Meta as being approved.
I find it hard to believe that TVR wouldn't fit a CAT 1 alarm on a car of this class!
Not knowing what alarm was fitted i have just been and checked and it is as detailed above.
Thanks for your input folks, however this leads me to my last question, has anybody else had to upgrade their alarm for better insurance?

No, A plan for me, any decent insurance broker, who knows the cars, wont ask you what alarm it's got.

They'll already know smile

I'm with Flux and after some wrangling over this point, they downgraded their requirement to Thatcham Cat 2.

I'm sure in my papaerwork I have a copy of a letter from the factory confirming the status of the alarm for insurance purposes and it was Cat 1 as standard. Mine is a 96.

I have a letter in with my handbook that says:

'Fitted with M99T2 alarm system. This alarm comprises of 2 units linked together; the M99T2 alarm control unit with batter backed siren and the M36T2 immobiliser along with the M23A microwave sensor. The M99T2 alarm system together with the M36T2 immobiliser is a Thatham category 1 approved article if fitted by a Thatcham approved installer.'

However in the discussion back in March there was a discussion about whether TVR were approved fitters.

However, I use A Manning, told them the above and they were happy.

Tell them you've been quoted £*** by ******

Like all insurance companies, they'll miraculously beat the new price you've been quoted.

I'll have to scan the letter I have from TVR engineering this evening. The comparison between mine and russells is funny.

I'll have to dig mine out too, sure it doesn't say that and was signed by the same person! Maybe I'm wrong, it has happened once or twice before.
