Cough Cough! Think its trying to kill me!

This is the last thing i need to tackle on my cerb and then she will be perfect (famous last words)

Ive driven a few cerbs now and not noticed any fumes coming in but after living with mine now I'm finding its getting a bit fumy. nothing to severe but bad enough to leave your clothes smelling a bit oily and after a lot of driving leaves a bit of a taste in my mouth, cant be good for me.

Now the obvious is exhaust but this seems in good order and has recently been taken off and refitted so I'm ruling that out. any ideas chaps, is it normal? do i have to buy a gas mask or is there something wrong?

Do you always drive with the window open, or do you get fumed out with it closed?

I would have guessed that the crankcase breather is venting on to the exhaust and then finding it's way in to the cabin, either through the window or through a gap in the bulkhead...

Are they definitely exhaust fumes or could it be oil leaking onto the exhaust? I got my car back after some work and they had knackered the front crank oil seal, every time I stopped the car filled with smoke!

I used to get smoke coming up around the handbrake when I stopped, as oil was leaking from the tail of the gearbox onto a heat shield and from there onto the exhaust. Alternatively, the smoke came out of the rear wheel arches. A seal was replaced on the gear box and all was well again.

Thanks guys, i will check all these things but as seems to be the case with all these niggles its not immediately obvious, tends to creep up on you.

Having the windows down its not to bad as you've got the extra airflow through the car but you do get a waft of fumes when you stop at lights etc.

With the windows up its more subtle but now I'm aware of it i tend to keep the windows down or at least the passengers side to try and draw any fumes away from me, not pleasant either way.

Did you remove and re-fit the exhaust to try and locate the problem, or did the fumes start after the exhaust was fitted? After fitting a sports exhaust recently, I had the same problem!

My problem turned out to be where the tailpipes exited. Too far out seemed to cause a 'swirl' effect where the exhaust gases were being sucked back into the car. Re-fitted the exhaust with the pipes further in, and the problem improved dramatically! Miss the effect though, I used to arrive at my destination without really remembering how I got there!

Lee, previous owner here. Ever since I decatted it I noticed a smell of fumes. I removed and reseated the bypass pipes with exhaust paste but still the same. Some have mentioned oil on the exhaust and as with most of these it does leak from the air box. I removed the trap re-sealed it along with the hoses but the bugger still leaked.
My final job which I did't get round to (sorry) was sorting out the draught in the foot well. You should be feeling it now the temps dropping. I was going to try sealing the front wing as I suspect dirty air may have been sucked in from the engine bay.
Just a thought but maybe worth a try.
Hope you're still having fun with it.
all the best

Oh and I checked under the seats for dirty knickers, nothing so one less thing to cross off the list.

before and after. Interesting that you should say that as Ive been thinking that might be the cause. I have sports pipes on the car but someone has pigeon welded 3inch tails on and I'm thinking that's the problem. I have spoken to Tim at ACT thinking i could just buy a new set of sports pipes, but oh no its not that easy, opened a whole new can of worms there. Now do you want 2.5inch tails, 3inch tails, 3inch with extra silencing, cherry bomb decat, square ones with feather dusters sticking out the ends etc etc

Anyway think that's the main cause now so i guess its out with the cheque book again weeping

Mine was a little fumey in the Summer but not since. I keep the engine bay spotlees and clean up any little weeps of oil if there are any with some WD40. Been ok even with the windows up. I do know what you mean though. A light headed feeling when you get out of the car etc. Might just be you have to give eveything a good clean.

I have the same problem Lee, and its one I want to get sorted out this winter.

Though I was thinking it was a cracked/fractured exhaust manifold...
So they will be coming off for inspection as soon as I get the time.

Interested to see what it is causing your fumes in the cabin.

Hello Lee,
No worries mate glad alls well, sorry to hear about the niggles though paperbag but how's the new CT clutch working out? Also do a search re: blocking up the front wing maybe someone who's done it can offer some advice. I checked everwhere else and found no likely source. Could also be the source of the fumes - maybe. Still haven't found the bag of 100amp fuses but I'll send them on as soon as they turn up.
Cheers
David

Hi David, clutch seems to be doing what a clutch is suposed to do but then so did the old one apart from that leaked. Had a new flywheel fitted at the same time as the old one had a few worn teeth, this seems to of sorted the starting issue as well, fingers crossed so far so good oh and a set of tyres all round. thinking of putting the cats back on to quite things down a bit. apart from that all good.

Tis a little on the loud side at times, I thought it had a more refined sound with them in but then the hooligan in me took over.
