Gent's, I'm semi-considering a cerbie. I've wanted one for a while and now having driven one yesterday, I'm in love cloud9 The example I drove is a speed6 (29k miles) and is easily the cleanest example i've driven (previously looked at a few chims). So which is the best engine to go for? I'm not a fan of the noise the 8 makes although the performance makes up for this. On the other hand the 6 sounds absolutely glorious IMO, and certainly doesn't want for poke. So as my first TVR, which is the better engine to go for? I'll be going in with my eyes open, but don't wont periodical engine rebuilds. Cheers, schnell

Big Al.

I was at a TVR Dealer's two weeks ago and, whilst talking generally, the guy said "Yeah, that's the problem. Customers don't understand the problems with the Series 1 Tuscan"

I cannot recommend my 2001 4.5 highly enough I've heard all sorts of tosh about the .5 not being driveable in town or as a commuter and it's absolute bollox. She is the most Jekyl and Hyde fun you can have without drinking te potion yourself.

Did I forget to mention - shout Buy a 4.5 V8 !!

p.s. Actually the guy you have to ask is RusselM. He currently (?) owns a 4.2 and 4.5 so he knows.

Both are excellent engines and I'm sure you will be happy with what ever you go for.

I was after a V8 Cerb and test drove quiet a few 4.2 and 4.5 and they were both nice, however I much prefered the SP6 over them and never regretted it for one minute superb engine and never had any issues.

But then again I did end up buying a TUSCAN..driving

Speed 6 for me, the sound is brilliant and the performance ain't too bad either. I know there are lots of horror stories but AJP's aren't exactly bullet proof either. You have to remember these cars are high performance so they won't last like a mercedes diesel. Put some money aside just in case.

My merc diesel had an engine prob at 'only' 60K ish. (then again both my cerb V8s were rebuilt).

So Speed 6's are bargains?

They are all great, and incidentally all 'AJPs'.

Sixes are currently cheaper thanks to their early build quality reputation, and the appeal of 4.5 tweeking. Don't write off the S6. If you get one, put away what you saved over a V8 as contingency and you'll have years of smiles.

Very little in it so I understand. (power to weight ratio that is)

Performance must be about the same then.

Is the 6 cheaper to maintain compared to the 8?

So what reamains is the 'I've a V8' thing then . . .

I refuse to answer this question on the grounds it might incriminate me

...and I've poured £8k into the car in as many months, with no significant upgrades

Seriously, there are no significant savings to had one way or the other. As for that V8 thing? I've got a V8 and a V12 (not cerbs), and it affects my manhood not a jothehe

Definitely go for a V8, the six cylinder will more than likely go bang at some point, it might be 20K down the road but it will happen. I'm sorry to say.

Pre 98 4.2 V8's can snap cranks as well but other than that the V8 is pretty tough and there are several cars out there with 80-100K on the original engine

how can you not like the sound of the v8? I'm sure i can hear almost every nut and bolt of my engine biggrin

also when it revs it is a beast, so violent.
