Hi,
I have a 98 4.2 and it has a standard exhaust system on, i'm not really looking to replace the whole system at the moment as it's in good condition and i've spent plenty in the last month on tyres, service etc. I was wondering if it's worth removing the cats or does doing this require remap etc for little gain.
Basically am I better waiting until I feel like changing the lot? Any advice appreciated.
Cheers Ed.

i've got linked decat sport pipes on a 4.2 96. Good sound but very loud, and not fitted very well. Thre 'braaaaks and bangs are good fun though.
Stick with what you have imho. Apparently changing the exhaust is the quickest way to a power decrease, and you also will struggle getting your car on a track - or so i have understood from this forum.

So if I do go for the decat how much power could be lost, or would it not be noticable. Also without the cat when you say there will be more noise does that mean more pops and bangs etc without being too loud on long runs. or will it be generally louder over all. It's pretty loud already but I could definitely live with more pops and bangs

Just done a search on it and from what I can gather linked decat pipes seem to be recommended. I don't have a clue what the difference is between those and any other though
I think this is the type that will give more pops and bangs but not too loud on long runs at steady throttle. If so thats for me. Only questions now are where from, Are they easy to fit and how much?

Might be placebo but im sure its reduced the cabin temperature by not having hot cats jammed right underneath you, very happy with my linked trackcarsolutions decat pipes, went for linked as they were meant to be slightly better on the power front and slightly quieter, dropping the revs from 2500/3000 revs easily puts the popping and banging into fierce effect, the quicker you can reduce the revs (i.e. the lower the gear) the more violent the audio onslaught/drive by shooting becomes. Mines the linked decats with sports exhaust (not sure which manufacturer for the back box, dont think there are that many manufacturers to choose from), and when cruising, shes tame, but really roars with more gas/higher revs.
In terms of power output, I was always told that a linked exhaust system is beneficial for cross-plane v8's due to the interaction of exhaust gases, but that this isn't something that should be done to flat plane v8's, or at least there isn't anything to be gained from it compared with individual decats on the bhp front.
Quoting Wiki:
"While the firing of the cross-plane V8 is regular overall, the firing of each bank is LRLLRLRR; this leads to the need to connect exhaust pipes between the two banks to design an optimal exhaust system. This complex and encumbering exhaust system has been a major problem for single-seater racing car designers."

This is one of the problems with engine design - what the theory SAYS should happen, and what actually works, can be different. I know Trackcar has done plenty of exploring with the cars to reach the decision to supply linked de-cat pipes.Quoting Wiki:
