4.2/4.5 1998 or 1999 model? help please
Discussion
Ok then thanks for all your help soo far i am getting closer to knowing what model i am after
from what i have read and been told the v8 seems to be the prefered option but what i am unsure of is two things
but b4 i start i am aware that the main point is to buy the best be it 98 or 99 or 4.2 over 4.5 but i must clear up i want to get the best between all the options and if i have to sit and wait for 2 or 3 months to find this i will do so.
i have been told the 99 spec cars are better then the 98, they were slightly stronger lumps with a lightened body, updated interior and better visibility from the front screen. is this correct or am i off the mark.
were there any other pro's or con's with the 99 spec over the 98?
the other thing to clear up is the engine size 4.2 or 4.5 i was aware that the cam in the 4.2 were weaker than the 4.5 but does this go for the 98 and 99 model again please please please correct if this not the case!
thanks

this is what i have understood.... the model changed halfway between 1999... the easiest way to tell the early one from the late one is the tuscan seats and the A-pillars are not carbon fibre but body colored ones. to me it makes the car just that little bit more complete.
the headlights, there are is no real way to determine when they changed, from what i can tell, the 4.5s went to the new style earlier than the 4.2 and the speed 6. (I have a 2001 4.2 with the single headlights).
in an attempt to cut cost, or maintain consistency, or whatever tvr's reasoning was, the late model v8 cars where fitted with the same engines, 4.5s. Again, I'm not sure when this started but it was early into the new style car. The crankshaft between all 4.2 and 4.5 are the same except the 4.5 are suppose to have steel cranks; the stroke is identical. The displacement difference is made up in the difference between the bore. The late 4.2s have the 4.5 bore and pistons. All factory indicated 4.2s have the 4.2 style intake (metal with the rectangular fuel rail) and all 4.5s, with a few exceptions have the rubber hose intake system.
The factory workers say the later 4.2s are desirable as they have the strong 4.5 components but the responsive 4.2 intake system.
As far as cams go, I don't know if there are differences or not.
The other pro for a late car is the powder coating supposedly got better. I had mine on the rack at TrackvRoad and the guy, his name escapes me at the moment, called every one in the shop over to look at the chassis and they all said it was the best they had seen in a long time on a 6 year old car.
On that note, it was mentioned that they highly recommend getting the car inspected by a professional as they lost track the number of times someone has bought a tvr blind, taken it in to sort a minor problem and been told its minimum 4k worth of work as the undercarriage is in such horrible state.

Stevie, just starting to throw cars out that the appeal from the classifieds, I thought this looked very tasty.

Fernies are said to be a decent bunch and know their cars, plus you will get a 12 month warranty with it. It's not a facelift model but as a 98 it should have the later crank on it so not the early 4.2 worries. If I was buying now I would be looking at this one I think.

so by the looks of thing the late 99 spec 4.2 is the way to go, you get the benifit from the 4.5 bottom end , the stronger crank and the better 4.2 responsiveness (if there is such a word)
i am guessing that there is not much in everyday use in regards to the power from the 4.2 to 4.5 what is it 20-30 bhp
what i dont want to have to do is get a 4.5 then pay X amount of cash to supply and fit the shorter intake and then pay for the remap as in my experiance this is not cheap ( on a subaru anyhow)
i would rather spend the cash on maintaining the car, new brakes or suspension set up as i have read that this can need doing as the stock are no tthe best! how much should you budget for suspension upgrades? what are the best value for money?

also thanks for the advert i had seen that one already and like the 12 month warranty too.
but as mentioned regarding the under chassis who would need to take a look at this it is mentioned as a professional are we talking of an AA car inspection or someone who owns a TVR themselves. as if not i would be buying blind.
which also leads me to when i go to finaly get one would anyone be interested if it fit their diary to come and help me buy one as i dont care how much a AA inspection is good it in my opinion it wont be as good as someone who owns one and knows what a good one should drive like etc, obviously i dont mind paying as someone would be giving up their time
shame i will not be getting one until the new year as i am off on holiday and need to get xmas out the way.
