Starting Issue
Discussion
Any one out there who can help?
My cerbie starts first time every time from cold and most times when hot BUT occasionally when starting from hot I press the start button and all I get is a long continuous drone nothing happens it doesn't turn over or anything at all.
It starts first time from a push start.
Have changed the relay under the passenger dash and this seemed to work for a time but the problem has returned.
Any ideas for a non mechanic please?

It sounds like you have immobiliser trouble.
Obviously we're not going to post on here how the wiring of an immobiliser works or anything like that.
I'd suggest you go to your local dealer / indie or get in touch with Carl Baker who's the expert on all things Meta.
His details are here http://www.tvruk.tv/contactus.cfm

The fact that it starts OK from a push start I would have assumed its starter motor related myself and not immobiliser tbh.
I disagree.Mine behaved exactly the same as described above after I got it.
The previous owner even claimed he changed the starter motor with no success in solving the problem.
I finally sussed out that the cause was the immobiliser.
I do know how to sort this problem 99% of the time ..... but I can't post it on here for obvious reasons.
So what makes the immobiliser go t!ts up? (Rain?)
Also, where is the relay under the passengerside consol. Have found the 40amp fuse but no relay.
Has been fine for a while and now playing up again and living with holding the black button for a few mins when restarting.
Wanna change the relay before going
on the immobiliser

As far as I could figure out it is only the starter motor circuit that goes faulty on the immobiliser most times, the rest of it is generally fine (I know yours went completely Seanie).
While the relay is rated just strong enough for a healthy starter, it will suffer if the starter motor draws anything above it's rated current.
The replacement immobiliser from Carl Baker is a slightly different one to the original and, as far as I remember, has addressed this problem.

It could be a hot starting issue? The starter motors on the AJP's basically cook themselves with the engine heat. The rotor of the starter then expands more than the stator and causes the unit to lock. If your hearing a slight electrical buzz and the pop of the soleniod activating i would think its the starter motor jamming.
I think the immobilizer also stops the fuel pump kicking in. So if you can bump start the car i wouldn't think the immobilizer is at fault.
