I'd been working on the assumption that my heater fan had packed in altogether, as was just about to take the passenger footwell apart, when I realised that the fan was actually working, it was just utterly pathetic. Now toying with the idea of having a go at refurbing the motor, but just wantewd to get an idea of how good/bad these things are in full working condition, and how far off mine actually is.

How loud should the fan be? Mine's totally inaudable with the engine on, and probably comparable to a mobile phone on silent vibrate.

Air pressure? Even with the footwell vents closed, there is little discernable air pressure from the windscreen vents. Perhaps the faintest waft, but its difficult to be certain.

Windscreen clearing? I'm doing bottom third at best. I'm going to fog-X it as an interim measure, but surely the heater should be doing better?

If anyone's got any guidance on how to refurb the motor, that'd be useful too...

cheers

There were a couple of early variants on the plumbing and changes to the windscreen vents so it may depend on your particular setup as to how effective it is.

Mines a 98 car with 2 large circular vents towards the centre of the dash.
The plumbing is the later black 'cows udder' under the steering column.

The dash vents are very effective at clearing the windscreen. If angled correctly they force air around onto the side windows and clear the front end of those as well. (Not much consolation if you have the row of small holes along the windscreen edge)

Even though it works the hot fan isn't particularly powerful and I can't hear it when its on.

If you don't have the black cows udder under the steering column then have a read of the section in Faisal's Cerbera Manual on heating

I asked Andy at APM about the heating on your car and he thought it was normal. I was never happy with it. I did post on here a yr or so ago. I was told to look for leaves in the motor but never got round to trying. It does warm the car up, just takes a while.

My heater has a simple toggle switch that a previous owner fitted. Full on or off. I guess the rotary switch packed up and they couldn;t be arsed to sort it properly.

However the fan is as loud as! So maybe your fan, is out duff? I have a 96. The little holes for the windscreen do work after a time but you need to shut down the vents, particulalry the two big vents in the centre, to get enough pressure.

Found it helps with the air con on a little too for the dehumidifer effect. Oh and helps to charge the battery up over night if you are running all that, the rear demister and your ICE.

Is this because of cold air blasting in at speed on the driver's side? If so, fixes have been described previously on PH.

I discovered this evening that some of the cold air "leaking" into mine is actually coming in through the carpet at the RHS of my feet.

I'll have to investigate that soon.

I've found that the car heats up better (a little bit at least) when I have the fan on at about half-speed and not on full-blast.

But I have got into the habit of bringing a jacket and hat with me most times. yikes

I was suffering cold feet on motorway trips.

When I got around to checking the plate behind the carpet in the drivers footwell I found a massive gap that was allowing a howling gale through.

The cold fan sticks out a bit through the hole so the panel wasn't flush fitting.

Judicious use of self tappers and sikaflex has sealed it off nicely. No more cold feet.

Although now I have to cycle the hot fan on and off otherwise it gets too hot.

I reckon I could live with that problem.

Cheers fellas. I guess I'll go digging around in the panel behind the passenger footwell to look for any blockages, and get a multimeter on the fan motor at the same time to evaluate its health. In the meantime, the fog-x seems to be doing a pretty impressive job.
