value of a cerb?
Discussion
I'm interested to see peoples views on this aswell. I was hoping to recover half the price of the rebuild on mine. I value my car around the 10k mark, so was going to put it up at £11750 with an engine warranty.
If your warranty has expired, I wouldn't expect to pay any more than book price.
Like wise, I wouldn't expect to pay the full rebuild price on top of book price, as if buying at book, you'd expect the engine to be usable .
Does any of that make sense ?

I felt that I got more for both my 4.5s due to recentish engine rebuilds than a comparable 4.5.
It may have only been that the asking price was similiar but the buyers didnt want to make silly offers as they knew the engine rebuild (and the rest of the history and condition) made the price reasonable.

Please pardon my ignorance here, but why does everyone seem to expect an engine rebuild at some point? Should I be factoring this in?
If you;ve got the AJP V8, and you treat it with respect until it's warmed up, I would'nt worry ar all.
j/kI wouldn't go getting rebuild for the hell of it, I reckon a standard rebuild would add say 1-2k to an average car assuming everything else was in order i.e. say 13k unknown and 14-15k with fresh engine as you know it would have set the owner back at least 4k to get it done.
Some of the prices I've heard dog rough Cerbs go for I think I could get similar money for my lump removed from the car tbh
.
Saying that I made the mistake with my old V8S whereas it had a fully rebuilt lightened and blue printed 4ltr with 3D ignition, Nitrons, big brakes, bespoke manifolds and exhaust etc. It was probably one of the most powerful and capable NA 4ltr rv8's out there, sold it for average money
. With hindsight I should have removed most of the upgrades, refitted standard bits (of which I had most of it, bar the engine in the garage..... anyone want to buy the rare catted manifolds and Y piece off one of only 25 catted V8S's made
). Then I could have sold the car for the same money and the upgrades separately, I would have almost doubled my money
.
I suppose contrary to what I first posted above upgrades make a car more sellable but not necessarily for more money
.

my engine was fine 40k,but the aux shaft broke last week engine out to repair so i think it makes sense to go for a rebuild?.
Depending if it's using much oil.IMO, if it's not using more than a litre per 1000 miles, I wouldn't bother.
I've always been careful with mine, in terms of warm up procedure, but it just got more & more thirsty. I'm not convinced it's mileage related, as my other car has the same mileage & doesn't use any oil.
I have a daily 1.5 mile journey to work in mine, so I'm fairly certain lots of cold starts led to the premature rebuild. That & the fact that I've lost oil pressure at least twice due to duff oil pressure springs. One of which was a day after I bought the car, so I'd be confident the previous owner had probably starved it a couple of times as well.
The other thing with mine, is that I'm fairly certain the dipstick under reads. Anything below maximum, and I used to get zero oil pressure on left turns.
When it's due to go back in the car, I'm going to get them to put a new mark on the dipstick for me

i had no plans to have the engine rebuilt as it was running well and it didnt seem to use any oil.
also after getting the car home after the breakdown i refilled it water and ran the engine for about 5 seconds,to my untrained ear the engine the engine sounded fine.
i have been advised that due to the overheating there could be engine damage?.
i could just have the shaft repaired and the engine refitted, but then if there is a problem then the whole lot has to come out again.
i think also if there wasnt a problem obvious staight away it would play on my mind that there was a time bomb ticking away in the engine.
has anyone else had the aux shaft fail on their engine?,if yes was there further engine damage?.
if anyone has any suggestions feel free,i feel i am in a position where i'm damned if i do and damned if i dont.
thanks.
