I'm having a bit of difficulty with my gearchange, especially from cold. 1st and 2nd are quite stiff with 1st even sometimes refusing to engage unless I shove it hard. It does that at random times though, quite rarely, but now and again. The rest of the gears, including reverse, all work OK but are slow to engage, no snappy gearchanges here, if I do go for a quick change I easily beat the syncro and end up with a nasty crunch (so it's granny changes all round at the momentfrown).

The car has done around 42k miles, not sure if the clutch has been changed before, I'll go through the documentation this week and see whan it was last done.

I've checked the master cylinder fluid levels and they seem generally fine (although it looks like someone has mixed fluids in there. It looks like that clearish DOT5.1 is in there, but it also looks like there's some coloured stuff, maybe DOT4? Also there's a slick of blackish material around the top, a bit like a cup of tea when the teabag has been left in for too long, if you know what I mean)

The clutch itself seems to work generally as it should as far as engaging goes. It's not too high, bites smoothly and doesn't seem to be slipping under power.

Anyway, assuming the clutch fluid is fine, what other options are there before I go down the route of a new clutch? Could it be the 'box linkage, generally worn box (it's a '97 car) or something else?

I'm assuming it is the clutch, but don't want to spend that sort of money if it's the 'box itself.

Sounds like you have some broken fingers.

I reckon the "tea leaves" in the fluid reservoir are remnants of seals. I had that before the clutch operation went south altogether. However when the Bellhousing came off the fingers were fine. Try pumping the pedal a few times before you attempt to put in into gear. Mine was worse first thing in the morning but after some pumping it got going again - bit like me really wink

The symptoms he,s describing are exactly the same as what i had.On strip down 0of the clutch it was found that three of the fingers had broken off.He could have a combo of the two.

Similar problems myself with 2nd and third. Absolutely fine when fully up to temperature.

Can't understand possible link to clutch and broken fingers. How would this be temperature affected?

Viscosity of clutch fluid will change with temperature, as will effectiveness of seals.

To be fair it's not perfect even at temp, it's still a bit sluggish to change, but it does seem easier to select gear after it's been driven for a bit.

I still assume it's the clutch, but thought I'd ask to see if anybody else had any other ideas.

The clutch fluid does look a bit odd. It looks slightly like there's a mixture of pink/purple fluid and maybe DOT5.1 clear stuff.

I *think* that silicone stuff is purple, isn't it?

Can you bleed the system with everything in place? I may try removing the old fluid and adding some new. The cars old, God knows when it was last changed. It may just be full of water or something. It's worth a try before swapping the clutch, I suppose.

The system doesn't seem to be leaking at all. I hadn't opened the reservoir since I bought the car and it was still nicely topped up, so I doubt it's seals. If it's nothing to do with the 'box, then it must be the clutch itself.

So, anybody fitted the clever trevor raceproved clutch? Any other clutches to look at?

I,ve got the CT slave, which is much easier on the leg.I could,nt get a clutch at the time last year.As CT did,nt have any for a few months,so had to settle on a second hand one to get me to Fighting Torque.
