Hi all,

Over last couple of days the car has started hissing steam, for a split second, from the passenger side of the bonnet just every so often, looks good but scrary. Only when up to normal running temp. As it just finishes hissing then the temp dial goes up about 10-15deg, Weirdly not as it hisses but when it stops, then happily returns back down to normal running temp within a few seconds. Think it'll just be the coolant top needing replacing?? Or what??

Also noticed that around the front passenger side injector there seams to be a kind of oily deposit around where is fits into the engine. Think its bad?? Or just injector O Ring leaking a bit??

Ideas??

Thanks

If its coming from close to the front, that's where the temp sensors are. Sounds like you could have a leak around there and getting an airlock which causes the gauge to jump

Is it from the expansion tank? Is the cap on tight?

I think it is from the tank. Cap is on tight, but doesn't feel 'right'. tightens down to the bottle rather than sealing in the cap I think.

A loose cap would vent coolant, yes, but I can't see how it would cause a temp spike. It sounds like you are getting pockets of air in the coolant pipes, which leads to pockets of superheated vapours which cause the temp spikes as they pass the sensor. Air pockets in the system can also stall the water pump for a few seconds, again causing temp spikes.

Issues as you describe are very common and indicative of head gasket failure, whereby the pistons force air into the cooling system causing such problems as over pressurisation and overheating spikes.

Try bleeding the system first, and if the problems persist look at the headgasket as a possible cause.

Okay, doesn't sound good.

How do I go about bleeding the system?

Thanks

Well, different people do it different ways, but I've found a very quick and effective method that I've used a number of times. See the link;

http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=28803

It requires a compressor, but the reasons its so good is it creates a partial vacuum in the coolant system before filling. This does two things a) it locates any leaks in the system as air will hiss from leaks and b) if your headgasket has gone you won't be able to sustain the vacuum, the pressure will slowly return to atmospheric (part of the test is to leave it for a minute to see if the pressure changes before filling). As for filling, you flick a switch and it dumps around 7 litres in in no time.

But I got mine off ebay for £10, doubt I'd pay £100 for it. If you're in the yorkshire area you can borrow mine!

As for your injector issue, is it a single injector or all 4? Can't see how an injector issue would cause overheating unless it caused it to run VERY lean across the whole bank.

I've always presumed A leak in the coolant system will cause water to leave the system & air to get introduced in to the system. Causing overheating/air locks/temp gauge bouncing about.

Mines is at the moment with the same symptoms, but if I look carefully I can see steam coming from below the expansion tank.

Most likely the hose on the bottom, but apparently the expansion tanks are prone to getting a pin hole in them aswell.

The cap is from a VW Golf - VW part # V443 121 321 "K41C Cover", that may be all you need. According to my Indie 'Guru' the design of the AJP V8 means that it does, over time, generate Air pockets in the cooling system and should be bled every so often, hence the prominence of a great big bleed screw on the radiator, and 2 more on the water rails.
