trouble with my slave.. i think?!
Discussion
Hi Gents, and Ladies too of course.. id like to pick some of those experienced cerbera brains if i may?
i purchsed my first TVR, a lovely 97 black 4.2 cerbera with bottle green leather just before xmas and am chuffed to bits with it.. a few weeks back i had my first (of many im sure)little problem.. i slowly lost pressure in the clutch over an hour or so.. at first i thought it was the master cylinder(ive not really been into cars since beeing a teen so im a bit green at the moment) but after checking the forums (which by the way, thanks to you guys, was very helpfull indeed) i found that there was no fludid in my footwell so its prob the slave?(right so far?) so i checked the reservoir, it was about an inch from the top but had some mucky black silt in it too. i wiped it out and topped it up, got her up on ramps and sure enough i had some clear/pinkish fluid ou the underside of the box.. (ive been told this is a sign of the slave going??)
anywaw, she ran fine for a couple of weeks before it happened again. i topped her up and she was all good again..
well now its time sort it out as it doesnt want to hold fluid any more.
ok, so far does this sound like a buggered slave cylinder??
looking on line its about £255 for a new slave, she's only done 26k so do i fork out for the whole thing or just seals? also, is there anything else i should look for while im inside?
by the way, im not doing this myself.. im just eager to learn so i'll be observing my mechanic pal..
im sorry to bore everyone with the whole story but i figure it might help someone else with similar symptoms..
thanks for hearing me out.

Hi Dyllan
As you've got to get inside the bell housing to get at the slave cylinder while your in there you might as well change the whole slave cylinder. Your slave seals have possibly been damaged by a scored piston inside your existing slave this would soon damage any new seals fitted. I had one of the new type slaves fitted to my Cerb last year, I think the piston and cylinder have either some kind of special coating or treatment to help prevent wear on both piston and cylinder. £225 sounds a bit steep.
A word of warning. Get it sorted sooner rather than later don't just keep topping up the clutch master cylinder with fresh fluid. The leaking fluid will eventually contaminate the clutch friction material and cause premature clutch failure.
Hope this helps
Regards

Thanks for the compliment, I've had Her 3 years next month with very few troubles.Dyllan
220 Tomcat Turbos are quite a rare sight now.
Hope all goes well with your clutch, slave, etc.
You'll find this forum can be extremely usefull as some users on here have vast amounts of Cerbera related knowledge with many, many years experience of these cars between them.
At least you can look forward to the summer safe in the knowledge you'll be free from any clutch related woes.

ok, well me and my mate got her up on ramps and managed to drop the gear box and clutch out in about 45 mins which was a pleasant supprise. while we were in there i tightened up the handbreak which runs above the drive shaft. i also had all the bits and bobs id removed zink plated while they were off, a new stainless exhaust made and gaz shocks put on the back.. the old ones left my wheel arches rubbing the tyres.. the uprated "raceproved" clutch goes in tomorrow along with the new carpet and door seals.. fingers crossed this'll keep me out of trouble for a while! cant wait to get her back on the road!!
thanks everyone for the advice
