Hello all,

I have bought some larger front discs for my 98' 4.2 Cerb. The discs are 30mm larger than standard so now I need spacers and 15mm longer bolts. I have the spacers but the bolts are hard to track down. They are 10mm metric 1.25 fine thread, high tensile with sk head.

Does anyone know where I might find four of the above? Any help appreciated.

Cheers Ed.

Have a look in Yellow pages under "Fastners", most big towns will have a few places where you an buy them.

Have tried quite a few. Some of them stock them but only up to 40mm long, I think I need them about 80mm long. Am waiting for a couple of places to get back to me so fingers crossed.

Do you have the calipers to cope with the larger discs? Calipers have an inner radius, which dictates the disc sizes they're made to handle. There's useful info on the AP racing website.

Don't know about the calipers being suitable, they are standard 98' 4.2 ap calipers. I was sold the discs by Ian at Torque RVT and he said they would suit so have taken his word for it.

Looks like 330 is max size.

More often than not you DO have to change the callipers on the 4.2 I think, certainly I am having to on my 4.2 (in with Andy @ ApM right now for the same thing). Having said that there were some different types of calliper fitted so some are ok - to determine it depends I think on the number of bolts you have I think (this followed a conversation I had with Bellhill who said I might be ok, but I wasn't frown ); 3 bolts along each side and you are ok, and 2 bolts you are not (this is from memory as my car isn't here, so may have that the wrong way round). I think the 2 bolts are the earlier 5100 calliper not 5200, and max size of that is 295mm.

Have just measured the new discs and they are 320mm. From the drawing above it looks like that is a caliper with two bolts to fasten which is the same as i have got so possibly I might be ok?confused

Hmmn, slightly strange that. The pic of the 5200 on the AP website definitely shows it having 3 bolts each side

http://www.apracing.com/calipers/products.asp?prod...

yet the diagram above does only show 2 confused

However if you look at the table, there is a version of the 5200 that maxes out at 304mm, where all the others are 330. I wonder if the diagram is for the version of the 5200 that is 304 max (2 bolts)and this is what went on the 4.2's and the others are the 3 bolts and have the larger capacity and were used on the 4.5. I think now I was wrong about the 5100 being the 4.2 caliper as doesn't look right either having now found a pic of mine.

Annoyingly I did find loads of threads on this a while back when I first started digging about this, but the new search function only goes back 2 years now so most aren't coming up - I remember Joolz on one of them giving a good account of what could and could not be done. The only thread I can find is this more recent one:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

If you see Longbows reply to me at the bottom of the page you will see his comments on upgrading, he concurs with the info Bellhill gave me about number of bolts 6 bolts for 4.5 spec and 4 bolts for 4.2 spec. Sadly I think if you have 2 on each side (4 total) you have the same calliper as me and it's not specced to take a 320 disc.

Oh bugger, just had the discs milled to make sure all was nice and straight as well. Roughly how much would you look to pay for a second hand pair of the 4.5 calipers do you reckon?
Ideally need to find someone with a 4.5 that's done a brake upgrade I guess, or someone with a 4.5 who wants some nice 320mm discsfrown

IIRC the 4.2 caliper inner diameter is 315mm, whereas the 4.5 caliper is 330mm. There are many different versions of the CP5200 caliper, that's the problem.

Paying £100 per calliper for my new 4.5 ones (used obviously), offset maybe by getting something back for the ones that come off (must be useful to someone) - so it's probably the easier option rather than giving up now you have the discs.

While you have your new calipers off the car, it's worth renewing the seals. BG Dev quoted me £10.50 a caliper for a seal kit. You can pop the pistons out with an air line, but you may need to clamp some in place to work round all of them.

It always seems like everytime I do something to my car it leads to me having to do something else. If I get the later 4.5 caliper will the original bolts I have fix the new caliper on or will I need something else? eek

Cheers Ed

The hubs are different, but only in that the 4.5 ones space the callipers out further to accomodate the larger discs found as standard on the 4.5. You can retro fit 4.5 callipers quite happily to the 4.2 hubs - I know this as this is how my car came, don't know why, but it did.

If you're upgrading from a 4.2 setup to a 4.5 you can either;

1. Buy 4.5 hubs, callipers and discs. Job done.
2. Buy 4.5 callipers and discs and use custom spacers or washers to space out the 4.5 callipers using the standard 4.2 hubs.

Don't forget the standard 4.5 has 322mm discs, but can take up to 330mm. The 4.2 as standard has 291mm discs and can only go up to around 306mmish from memory - certainly not 330mm as per the 4.5 callipers. Hence, if you've got a 4.2 and want to go bigger, just go the whole hog and go for 330mm.

Ok think i'm getting there now. I already have 320mm discs ready to go on. I have found some 4.5 calipers. I have the proper spacers needed to allow for the bigger disc. I will still need the longer bolts that started this post though. Hopefully Trident Racing will be able to sort those out for me...
