What would you expect to buy for £20K?
Thanks in advance
Check out the classifieds for prices, give you a good idea what you can get for 20k

Also, why are there so little cerbera's with reflex paint?
Reflex and Chameleon paints seem to be mainly found on Tuscans as they were introduced around the same time as the paint option. So both have tended to be associated with each other more than Cerbera's. Plus Cerbera owners have better taste

If you're looking at stats, rather than quality, you're talking something in the region of:
1999 T reg Speed 6, 20,000 miles.
1998/9 S reg 4.2, 20-25,000 miles.
I'd probably expect one of the usual upgrades for that (sports exhaust/18" wheels/pod based headlight conversion). Does also depend on such things as the colour.
Looking on Autotrader, there's a 2000 V reg 4.2 with 24k on the clock for £22k. Complete with a six-speed box from what it says? (assume they're including reverse in that!) Would imagine you'd easily get that down to £21k.
Personally, I'd base it on how good condition the engine, etc. were in rather than the age, mileage, and other such things that're usually compared, though. To me, the cost after a year or two is more important than the initial cost!

Thanks guys, I am interested in the 4.2/4.5. When did the 4.5 start from & would it be within range of £20K?
You can pick up a fairly early 4.5 (98 R) for £20k. It'll most likely have a few more miles on it than a 4.2 at £20k (not necessarily a bad thing, up to a point).
Not sure that you'll see much benefit out of it other than improved residuals over a 4.2, though. Whether or not it's any faster is pretty much down to the individual car with earlier Cerberas, and you won't be able to tell at anything close to legal speeds! Went through the exact same deliberations at the same price range myself until I managed to find a bit more money from somewhere!
Would've bought something approximating an S reg 4.2 with 15-20k on the clock (once the right one came along). Oh, and make sure you've still got some money tucked away on one side for anything that might go wrong with it! One question - are you bothered if it's from private sale or a dealer? A 4.5 from a dealer for £20k is possibly pushing it.
I paid £21,500 for my '99 (S) 4.5 back in March with 23,000 miles on it, bought privately.
If buying privately, worth going to see cars advertised 10-15% above your budget - there's usually some bargaining room with private sellers.
BUT, condition is much more important than age or even mileage, so see as many as you can. And you don't necessarily need to see huge bills for work completed on the car, as long as the service intervals have been followed rigourously and the stamps in the book match either mileage or time intervals.
Good luck with your search, you won't regret it. Just got out of mine after a fairly boring commute to work, but still grinning like an idiot!
cheers

I would prefer to have a car form a dealer, but buying privately looks more likely with my budget. Also, the nearest specialist is about 80 miles from here, so if it was the case of taking a car back for work to be done it would be a nightmare.
Buying privately also gives you the chance to meet the owner & question them. I assume that this is a very good way to get an idea of what the car is like.

You could also get an independent TVR specialist look at the car for about £200.
That would give you a full report and some piece of
mind, although they can't easily check the inner
workings of the engine.
Most have been happy though with their purchases though,
so it's pretty safe.
Good luck.

You can still get a Cerb for around 20K from a dealer, just a slightly older one. FWIW when Tam Lin and I bought ours, we preferred to pay that bit extra and buy from a dealer because it gave us some comeback if anything went wrong - which it hasn't!
So is ours. It's not all that bad!
This assumes that the owner is nice and honest.
IME dealers (or some of them at least) are more than happy to tell you what work they've had to do on the car to bring it up to scratch for a forecourt sale, and they might even tell you what'll need doing in the next 5000 miles or whatever. Your average private owner isn't going to tell you the car will be needing an expensive repair in about 1500 miles because you won't buy the car if he does!!

Has the pope started a dealership? My view is that dealers are experts at 'preparing' cars for sale. so I reckon a private car will look more honest. I dont agree that a dealer gives you much comeback at all. And you can buy your own warranty.

Yes, but they still have to keep a record of what work has been done on a car before they sell it. So whatever work has been done on it to bring it up to scratch will have been documented if the dealer is even halfway decent. You don't have to buy a car from any company that refuses to show you this record.
A private car is only a good deal if you can get someone to state honestly what they think the car is like. You can't rely on an owner keen to sell his car being 100% honest with you. Take this example: the owner of one car I went to see ages ago told me it'd had a minor rear-end shunt. On looking carefully through the paperwork, it had indeed had one minor rear-end shunt - and a couple of other shunts not quite so minor in character. Which he didn't mention and only a jolly good look through the paperwork revealed. But what if he'd thrown away all the invoices relating to the other accidents?
There's definitely a case for buying privately but getting the likes of Rob Ingleby to have a look at the car prior to purchase. And as regards the warranty - yes, you're right. But aren't these more "hidden" expenses that you need to factor in? Personally I'd prefer to give a dealer a few (!) extra quid and get them to do all the legwork.
Edietd to add: Of course, my views aren't the same for all cars! With the Cerb a dealer was our preferred option simply because there are so many expensive bits that can go wrong. If we'd been buying a runabout the same thinking wouldn't have applied...
