Gearbox oil - checking and topping up

Can either be done by me considering that the extent of my abilites in car maintenace means I can just about change an air filter, I am fairly good at putting go-juice in and I am pretty certain the engine in the big noisy thing under the cover thing at the pointy end of the car?
Does one ever even need to check such things between services anyway?

It's not the easiest thing to do due to the limited access. Unless I was doing it wrong, I found it quite tricky to get the fill plug back in (especially while oil runs all over your hand). Then it was difficult getting something to tighten it up. I managed to use a 3/8" wrench, but it was piggin' tight!
Trouble is, now you've thought it might be worth checking you probably won't rest until you've done it......a bit like when someone asks you if you've locked the back door!
