Sensible Questions - sorry!
Discussion
Hi,
I’m thinking of buying a 98/99 4.2 Cerbera to replace my elise but need to know a bit more before I bother people with test drives.
I love my Elise but fancy a change and need a bit more space.
Please could you answer the following questions referring to your ownership experiences?
-A dealer has warned me that doing a mileage of 15,000 per year will be very expensive.
He quoted at least £2500 a year on routine servicing. Can this not be done cheaper by independent specialists? Are there any around Surrey/West London?
-Would I be mad to try and do 2 hours commuting and several trips to the Alps in it each year?
-What sort of budget should I set aside for non routine repairs?
-What MPGs do they return in town and on motorways?
-Anything else I should ask?
Thanks

Hi there
The best starting place is actually on these pages.
Use the search option and most if not all will be revealed!
That said, yes 15k a year will cost a bit as you will
need 2 services in that time as they are done every 6
and 12k miles.
Indeed an indi would cost you less to do this than a
main TVR dealership and without extra work, the basic
services would cost you about £400 - £500 each.
You will need other work done though, so a fund of 3K
a year would be wise. You could end up with a lot of
that left, but get the wrong car and you could need a lot more.
MPG seems to vary, but I do a mix of local running about
(5 miles trips) coupled with one or two long journey's and
I'm getting about 21mpg or up to 280 miles from a tank,
some times less of course.
There are lots of questions that need answers before
you become an owner, but as I mentioned have a browse
here, you will learn a lot.
Do also get to an event, TVR Mania would be a great start.
Good luck!
Go create some weather...

15K pa ! Hmmm - think long n hard.
I would estimate that you will need 2.5 services pa at an avg cost of nearly 1K via an indie (ie by the time you add on small fixes). A dealer will be 30% more?
Plus add up tyres, clutch, petrol (18 mpg?), depreciation at such high miles, aircon regas, wear n tear etc... On your miles I would budget £4K pa.
