Experiences with built-in navigation systems (becker)
Discussion
Hi, i do have some experience with satnav and the alike!
The installed systems (like the Traffic pro) normally require a 'speed pulse' signal which you could get of the speedo (as the speedo uses a signal not cable)
Also many systems like the Alpine require connections to the reverse light and hand brake.
If you don't connect the speed pulse it will function but will be slow to respond at junctions etc.
Hope this helps.

I had that Becker unit in the family car one before last (a Mondeo St220, for my sins), and didn't really get on with it very well.
The lack of map screen is a major minus, as it can lead to some very confusing situations, such as negotiating a mini roundabout, when the voice suddenly says "now turn left" (i.e. exit the roundabout), when what it actually means is "keep going straight over the roundabout that you'd barely noticed was there".
Not having a screen also means that inputting addresses is a rather convoluted process of knob twiddling and button pressing. At least its so faffy that there's no question of trying to do it whilst driving.
TBH - having used TomTom and Syrius systems afterwards, I didn't think the database was terribly clever either, although its probably been updated since I had mine.
All in all, if it were me, I'd spend my money on a decent stereo to fill the hole in the dash and buy a TomTom One for £120. That does speed cameras as well, which is an added bonus.

Reason for a Becker built in for me is that I do not like seperate screens in cars and wires. The quality of the music is more than enough for me. Like to listen to the engine!
A good second hand comes for about 250-300 euros and I do not have to look to an awful japanese style radio.
Can anyone tel me which wire from the speedo to use for the speedsignal? Otherwise I think I will look for a Becker Indianapolis which has Bleutooth also. These do not seem to need a speedsignal.

Personally I dont see the point of expensive Built in Sat Nav. I've used a Tom Tom One (£120 ish) and it does th Job, taken me though France, Switxerland, UK and Cleethorpes. Does the job and you can move it from Car to Car.
Cos mine reroutes you through traffic jams
, whereas tomtom takes you neatly to the back of them.julian64 said:
