Ran out of webspace for these. If anyone interested in pictures as I go dismantling my second hand AJP8. Kind of a AJP8 horror show can they host and post, or at least let me know where to host cos it never works for me? smile.

How anyone thinks they can increase the diameter of the bore in a 4.5 I don't know frown

I thought 'bigger than 4.5' engines were stroked?

What's your plan?

Hi Julian - I don't know much about engines, however, should the engine look like this? I thought engines were clean, shiny and oily inside? Whats all that gunky orange stuff?

Sorry for sounding 'girly'! tongue out

Hi amazon wavey

I have no idea what the yellow stuff is. Its like rice pudding in consistency but wipes out easily with your finger.

I think, but its only a guess that its an emulsion formed between water, antifreeze and oil.

There is some light rust on the surface of the liners but again it seems to rub off easily with a rag.

It doesn't show up very well, but the surface of the piston on the left side is shiny metal. I've never seen a piston with shiny metal on before. Usually by the time I take an engine apart the pistons are covered in a centimeter of carbon deposits.

won't be till the engine is well in pieces that I'll be able to tell if the liners and pistons will need to be changed.

Got no plan at the mo. Got the impression from Andy at APM that he increases the bore must I rekon I must have had cloth in my ears cos it only looks possible if your name happens to be dumbledore.

Its a fire damanged engine that I'm taking apart to try and learn from.

At the worst its spares for the big day when my 4.5 lets go, at the best its a 4.7 ported and tuned engine to replace my normal one when its finished. smile

Julian,

I can set you up a user gallery on my website if you like?

It will be on TVRCerbera.co.uk

Let me know m8

Would be great to get as much info and pics as possible together.

Tim biggrin

PS, that gunk has got to be water ingress.

Actually it doesn't take that much...just to give u an example...20 thou increase over std in bore on an old style mini engine gives an extra 18cc...and an AJP has larger bore, longer stroke...and there are 8 cyls. wink

Julian - this could be used for you as it should contain all the parts that 'melted' on yours.

Is there an AJP8 out there with a shorter stroke, smaller than 4.2? revving over 8K and all? Or is this a dumb idea hence the 16 valves . . .

AJP8 4.2
75 degree alloy V8 engine, 4280 ccm
Bore/stroke 86 x 88 mm
Compression Ratio 10:1.
Max power 360 bhp @ 6500 rpm, redline 7000.
Max torque 320 ft.lbs @ 4500 rpm.

With an 81 mm stroke you'll get a 3.8 displacement, pistonspeeds stay within reason at 8K, to compensate the lack of torque a mech compressor could add to the fun: 500 brake?

But what do I know . . .

From looking at those pics i cant see how you could increase the bore size.Larger capacity engines must be stroked instead?.

Thought standard stroke was 86mm with 88mm bore on the 4.2 and 91mm on the 4.5.

My liners have been taken out to approx 91.5mm and that gets you 4.525 as opposed to 4.475 standard.
To get 4.7 the bore would have to go out to be nearer 94mm which has got to be tight on the remaining thickness of the liner as they don't look like they've got 3mm to give, let alone trying to get a decent cylinder seal with what's left confused.

Just been out to measure the bore diameters.

The bore is 90.93 mm on all cylinders give or take .02. I did this as accurately as I can with a micrometer gauge, and while I might be a thou out I guarantee it isn't 89mm, cos 89mm is mighty sloppy in this bore with both internal micrometer and caliper gauge.

The thickness of metal you can see between two cylinders is 9.04mm +-0.2

And the thickness of metal at the outer cylinder the thin bit at the forward end is 4.51 mm

What you would dare to go down to I don't know cos I don't have that experience.

As for the engine, thanks for the link but I am getting closer. Lothian is a bit of a way, if it was down this end of the world I'd certainly have a look. I have, or at least have bought, but not recieved yet, the pulley and rail with injectors, plus starter.
Water rails, and oil filler and a few ancillaries needed but I don't its worth going much further with collecting before I see what state this engines in. It may still be a parts bin.

There are unscrupulous people out there that might hide an engine failure with a fire, and despite having these heads off the engines still not for turning.

As for TT, lovely to have a home for the pics as I have mega trouble hosting them as they keep being deleted by the need for website space, just let me know how?

Doh, edited to add of course its not 89, its a 4.5 doh, thanks harry.

I reckon I'd be tempted to stick with the 4475cc and see how much power you could achieve with a decent head-port. There might be extra capacity for larger valves too.

On a 2-valve per cyl engine, it seems unlikely that you'll achieve 100bhp/litre but this engine already seems to defy conventions so why not?

Julian, have you got all the various torque settings and clearances anywhere? I really fancy having a go at an AJP8 but could use a Haynes-equivalent.

Andy at APM is converting a couple of engines to 4.7. He uses new liners made especially for the job. Give him a call, he will be able to point you in the right direction

Keep meaning to pop in and see Andy for chat, I'd love to see the bigger liners and how thin they are. Still think the cylinder sealing between the two adjacent pots is difficult.

So that makes the liners ~ 95.5mm OD, to get 4.7ltr from a 4.5ltr crank you need have a 93.25mm ID (bore) which leaves ~ 2.25mm minimum wall thickness yikes

Madness.

What about a shorter stroke to make it more highrevving?

Dry liners are often only 1mm thick but are steadied in the block by the surrounding metal. Wet liners virtually stand alone. I'd thought about Darton liners as they are probably the best available but I'd need a donar block to work with to assess the feasibility.
