whilst under the dash today found a map sensor (a gm part). traced the rubber air tube and found it not connected to anything, just hanging in the engine bay.
does anyone know where its meant to go?

If it's anything like the V8 setup then it's not a MAP sensor as such, more of a Baro Sensor due to it being upstream of the throttles and never measures any sort of depression.

May plug into the airbox? May just be left free.

in fairness i never checked the air box for a connection, was just looking around the throttle bodies and manifold but it wouldn't suprise me if it wasn't connected to anything

It connects to the back of the air box, the box it's self will have to come off to connect it back on, it plugs into a flimsy windscreen type fitting, I had to replace mine with a fitting from the local motor spares outfit.

I was told it does f....I mean, not a lot anyway....whatever its connected to...no noticable difference in running without one...so why have it ?....have to ask an expert.

found a home for the pipe, there's a useless threaded nipple sticking out of the back of the air box.

It makes slight corrections to fueling based on altitude. Makes little difference except if you go touring around mountains when it will save you over fueling and blowing black smoke out. In the UK you will never need it in the ordinary course of things. If you have it connected to the airbox it will also reduce fueling when the air filter is getting clogged but of course on a well serviced car that should not happen.
