Having recieved the engine back from the company doing the rebuild work, we are attempting to reconnect the gearbox to the engine. My question is:

Do we need a clutch alignment tool?

Seems to be difficult at the moment, any tips?

Whilst on the topic, the starter motor has had one of the electrical connections broken off it whilst the engine was being removed in the first place. I can only reinstall the engine this weekend really unless it waits for a couple of months, but sorting a starter motor will take a few days. Is it easy to refit the starter motor after the engine is installed?

Thanks in advance!

Presuming its a V8 the starter is easy but a bit fiddly to do with the engine in situ

With everything in place as normal it can be removed and re-fitted in about an hour!

With two clutch plates you really are better off using an alignment tool, but according to Mad Mark's clutch installation guide, it is possible to do it without one. The best thing you can do of course is to engage the clutch in order to free things up a bit.

I always use an old first motion shaft from a ford type 9 gearbox,(2.8 capri box has the longest shaft)find a gearbox reconditioner they will sell you an old one cheap.

That's good to know as I have one I sheared from a 2.8i gearbox which I've kept to use as an alignment tool.

No good to you this weekend though cos I couldn't put it in the post until monday

To refit the G/Box, remove the bell housing. Loosen the clutch mounting/retaining bolts in order to relive the tension in the clutch spring. Align the engine and gearbox on the ground and push the input shaft into the clutch. Tighten up the clutch retaining bolts. Remove gearbox, refit bell housing. Next time you go to fit the G/Box it will go in easily.

Excellente thanks, got th egearbox reattached by loosening off the housing and lettign the plates float, then tightening it all up again.

Engine now back in, got a few clips etc to buy before the last hoses are attached then we are just about ready to roll, well, when we get the starter motor back from repairs!

Is it best to remove the nearside manifold to refit the starter motor or will it fit down behind the engine?!

TIA
