My journey to Goodwood this morning didn't last long, before abandoning the car on a hill and walking home in the snow, so didn't get the chance to meet some Cerb owners and ask a few simple questions:

1. Shocks and Springs; mine look like originals, and there is very little movement in them when you bounce the corners. Is this normal ?

2. Oil Pressure; what should a healthy 4.2 AJP be reading ? Mine's sits around the 40 to 50 mark when warm, and doesn't really rise when pushed. Is this normal ? I'm told it's got Shell 5W40 oil in from it's purchase service.

3. I've bought some decent gearbox and diff oil; will this be a simple job once I can get it on the ramps?

any advice much appreciated.

Mike

Hi Mike,
You made the right decision on leaving the car, no point in taking the risk and it was seriously dodgy on the roads around Goodwood.

I don’t know much about shocks/springs, although a search for Nitrons on here should get the right threads.

Oil Pressure: switch to Mobil1 15w50 – you’ll burn less and get better pressures + ask your indie about the oil pressure relief spring, changed mine got another 10-15 more, which alleviates the heart in mouth moments when sitting in traffic.

See you soon,
Donny

Hi Mike, sorry you couldn't make it this morning but as Donny says it wasn't pretty down there. If the snow had been anything like it ended up as, before I set off, I would no doubt have aborted - we only made down cos it was pretty clear until about 40 seconds after we arrived, but the journey back was .. interesting.

Pressure sounds okish I would say so no immediate concerns, but yes should really go up a bit when revved, my one didn't used to move much either before the spring was last changed so probably just an old gammed up one in there that could do with a swap as mentioned. As for dampers the original stuff is not brilliant but what you don't want is bounce, so if it feels fairly stiff then probably means at least the shocks are working ok. Worth a chat with respected indie regarding an upgrade path, if yours are given a clean bill of health then you can take time to assess how far you want to go and when, saving up if needs be to get a really decent set put on. Gearbox & Diff oil... er that's a man who can job from a personal perspective, although I don't suppose tricky for non mechanical numpties as both are reasonably accessible I think..

See you out and about some time when the snow stops thumbup

thanks for the replies Don and TC; better investigate that pressure spring.

As for the shocks, the car feels and handles absolutely fantastic, even in comparison with my Chim with Gaz shocks and a proper wheel alignment, so I'm not overly concerned but just wanted a second opinion as to whether it's normal.

Hope to meet up one day; did my best to get out today but failed to get up a big hill on the way to the M4 then failed and abandoned the car on the way home. At least the Z4 behind me also got stuck !!

Don't wish to open a can of worms, but is there a Cerb gathering this year? Seems to be a Roar(Chim), BBWF and Griff Growl; what do the Cerb owners do (apart from the SPA/Ring) ?

cheers

Mike

Mike - when you said a decent Gearbox oil....the box is meant to use ATF, and the oil you use in the Diff is pretty critical, it should be Mobil SHC 80W 140ID, or equivalent - apologies if you already know this. Filling the Box and the Diff is a bit of a pain, awkward to get to and you need a long tube and a pump thngy to get the oil in.

I use a refrigeration oil pump like this one to get oil into awkward places

I have one 'cos I'm in the trade but if you plan on doing this type of job regularly it's worth searching for one (plus a hose to suit).

thanks; got Amsoil ATF for the gearbox and Castrol SAF-XJ for the diff (can't remember the numbers).

Will check my mechanic has a suitable "pump"

Double check that Diff oil - I was going to do mine myself, I had the car at TorqueRVT, and asked Ian about how to do it, and he almost through a panic when, and said 'Whoaa!! Be really really careful, put the wrong oil in and you will totally f**k the diff up. He ended up doing it for me, it wasn't Mobil, I an't remember the name, but it was some thick black stuff that had a funny smell. smile

Hi Mike, really enjoyed the drive yesterday, you got a great car there!

As jensenA said, I wouldnt use anything else than the reccomended oil for the diff, as i have been told that the wrong oil will have fatal consequences on it. I would suggest to play safe and use the mobil one (80-140). Gerbox oil is the ATF. I think it is used on automatic boxes!!

thanks All; diff oil is complicated by the fact that if you ask 3 different people you get 3 different answers, but I THINK I'm happy with what I've bought.

Glad you like the car Kostas.
