Hello chaps - long time reader, first time caller here.

I've had a Porsche 964 for a couple of years and, though it has been near faultless and great fun, I do find myself fancying a change with summer approaching.

Doubtless this question has been asked thousands of times but I'm currently sat at work coming to the end of a 70 hour week (should I get an 1990 Mx5 and an easier job?) and quite frankly don't have the time to search the forum! Besides, I understand that TVR owners aren't backward in coming forward with opinions on the marque (in contrast to drivers of older 911s who often find themselves going forwards backwards, particularly in the wet).

Put simply, should I buy a Cerbera for, say, £15k, run it for summer and flog it in November-ish?

Always a risk, that's what happened last time...

Couldn't help but glance at your record of cost incurred in the last 19 months. Makes my 911 look, well, quite cheap in comparison. I've heard stories about TVRs like everyone else but, is that typical?

I can't bring myself to look at what its cost me smile But subtract the Drop links, Exhaust, mapping and induction kit and it isnt that bad. I bought mine purely with what my heart told me, I wanted it, and I paid the price (happily) in sorting it. It only suffered one breakdown which was the Gearbox failure. Since then it travels up to Leeds at least 6 times a year, it's had 2 trips to the South of France and has never so much as missed a beat.
My advice about buying a Cerbera is this.......It is not a car that you buy with your head, you buy with your heart. But once you have decided it is going to be a Cerbera, then let your head have a say in the decision, and choose the best one you see, even if it isn't just quite the colour you wanted.

if your a sensible chappy who just fancies one for a few months, it's probably not the car for you. If your anything like the rest of us, hop on board and get one, you wont regret it, they're worth every penny.

Paul, I went from a Porsche to a Cerb. I think it's a good move as it's not a good 'first sports car' vehicle.

It's absolutely manic compared to a Porsche and you'll need about three grand a year to keep it in tip top condition (which you have to do).

Well worth it though.

Hi Paul.
I hope this helps....I bought my Cerb on 1st October 2000 just to get the TVR thing out of my system.wink I planned to keep it just for a year or so.........
Nearly 8 years later and I still own the most beautiful machines ever produced.biggrinbiggrin
Also, this you may find hard to believe but NOTHING has broken, fallen off or otherwise. It starts and goes just like it was designed to!smilesmilesmile

I've owned a 911 for the last 15 years and use my 964 as a daily driver. A fantastic car but soooo different to the Cerb. You only live once so do it!smilesmilesmile

If you don't have time to search forums, then maybe a cerb is not the car for you!

Agood friend of mine owned a 964 for 15yrs, but found he used it less and less. phoned me up 2yrs ago and said he had bought a chimaera. He loves it, and has had more fun in it already than he ever did in his porker. If you buy a cerb you wont wont to sell it. After owning a cerb anything else is just a down grade. Oh,iv'e owned mine for 6yrs, it's been completly reliable, and i just love it to bits. biggrin

So true. I'd bought mine only a year ago but had recently been offered an immaculate Bentley GT for a great price. I seriously contemplated trading in the Cerb until i looked in the garage again and realised it just wasn't going to happen. Totally smitten!

Cheers for the input, chaps. Out of work, finally, so probably spend the evening having a surf. have to say, it is extremely tempting.

One more thing - have been looking in the classifieds and seen a few affordable Tuscans. Have always been keen on those too, ever since my old boss had one. Anyone on here ever swapped from one to the other?

Hi Paul, occasionally i drive my mates 4.0 tuscan. It is very quick also but i find the cerbera more planted on the road, and the handling overall more predictable. The tuscan somehow feels less focused, it has a lighter feel on the steering, and is more unsettled on bumpy roads, but that maybe due to suspension, different wheels etc or just my preference. your best bet would be to go to a dealer and test drive them both, you ll get a better feel for both cars

good luck
