Just refurbished one of the headlights and I need to adjust the new reflector. I planned to shine the lights on the front of the garage door. What pattern am I looking for: height, left/right etc?

Use one of the proper headlight adjustment devices (like this one)

The difference it makes having the headlights pointed the right direction will justify the expense / hassle.

If you have the car on level ground about 2 feet infront of your garage door, measure from the floor to the centre of the headlight, then mark this hieght on the door. Now the tricky bit, from the centre of the headlight mark a point directly infront of the lamp (so you have a horizontal hieght line and now a verticle centre line) marking the centre of each headlight on the garage door.
Now turn your dip beam on and the flat, horizontal part of the beam wants to be just under the horizontal line and the kick up to the left wants to start going up on or slightly to the left of the verticle line. Simple!!confused
