Hi All.

Sorry I have just searched.. just seems so many posts and I am not finding the information.

I am just about to order Decat pipes for my 97 4.2 Cerb.. as I gather there are two lengths, 16" and 17.5" - correct me if I am wrong. I will be measuring this asap unless I am mistaken?

I read somewhere that there are not gaskets? Is this correct? Excuse me for my ignorance, not used to these TVR pritstick methodswink

That's right no gaskets just sealer (silacone or the like)
Not sure about the lengths though.

Don't use silicone to seal an exhaust. It will be "gone in 30 seconds" and leave a nasty smell.
Use exhaust paste.

What did everyone else use? Exhaust paste or something different? Any opinions would be appreciated. Cheers for the headsup Storer!

I've used exhaust paste but you can buy high temperature silicone which can be used on exhausts. There both as good as each other, I guess exhaust paste is cheaper and I don't like to changegetmecoat

I used exhaust paste but you can get high temperature silicone for exhausts. It is just as good and a bit more flexible than paste but paste fills small gaps better. The choice is yours.

Pop to Halfords and get some Firegum.

Used it for years, never fails. just don't use too much or it'll squish inside the pipe and reduce the cross sectional area.wink

I thought the longer cats were fitted to all 4.2s and the 4.5s had the 16" ones.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

When I removed my cats I used the thinnest smear of Firegum on the flanges. Never leaked to my knowledge.

hi,if you align the cats correctly there will be no need to use paste atall, just beware that the clamps can rub on the undershield!

Take a look at TCS http://trackcarsolutions.net/shop/index.php?act=vi...
It would appear early 97's were different mate.

Exaust Paste is sounding like the ticket at the moment, nice and simple smile

No it wont and no it wont. Even regular bath sealant silicone has high temperature capabilities and it doesn't crack like paste.

I use RTV for joining all my exhausts and manifold to cyl head, never had a problem and doesn't break up like some pastes do.

Any of the above will work, including nothing at all, take your pick smile The main difficulty with firegum is that it tends to go off before you have a chance to assemble the parts, particularly if you're hampered by space. Another suggestion is to give it a good clean and use some copper slip to aid with disassembly at MOT time (consider getting a fresh MOT first if it's coming up). Halfords sell copper grease by the tub which is good value compared with the tubes, and is also recommended for use on the threads of the clamp bolts.

Mot is 4-5 months away. So I will stick them on... So for ease I am thinking Silicone then, what's it like getting them back off? I assume silicone will be simple enough, surely exhaust pastes a little more difficult?

Just want it to be fairly easy for when I need to remove them. Plus, I have silicone in the garage and I don't have pastewink
Paste cracking doesnt sound like a good idea though!

When I took the exhaust and cats off there was no evidence of any paste etc being present at all...so its gone back together just the same smile
