Hello all,

For those who have had/are having engine rebuilds...

What was the main reason/reasons for having this done. Was it noisy, down on power, blowing smoke or did it just pack up etc.

I'm just interested in the fact that lots of owners seem to fork out loads on engine rebuilds.

my 1996 4.2 was running running really well ,oil 70psi then i was unlucky the auxillary shaft failed.

while the engine was out i had it rebuilt by andy apm he replaced my bottom end with a much later one,
now its running really well again oil 80psi.

the milage was about 40,000 when the shaft failed, andy did say the crankshaft looked ok but i wanted any part that could be iffy to be removed.

I've heard that tvr power do rebuilds for many smaller indies, although Im pretty sure apm/andy does his own - anyone know who else specialises in sjp rebuilds (and doesnt just pass the job on) - im pretty sure castle race engines is another reputable place

Mine was getting better & better, but constantly topping the oil up, was getting on my nerves.

I reckon, depending on driving style and outside temperatures, I was using a litre of oil every 200 miles.

One day, I covered 700 miles accross France, and the stopping and checking for accurate oil levels on a hot engine, was a Pita.

The oil usage was only getting worse month by month, and I thought the time was right to have it done. smile

i have been reading about other owners reasons for rebuilds with interest, which made me think back to my old engine.

as i wrote above, plus the engine made the right noises on cold start up but quiet when hot.

between services i had never needed to top up the oil infact i had no concerns about the health of my engine.

i think i was just unlucky and you just nener know.

Al, APM do rebuild them and Andy does them himself which is an important factor! Cheers Jonny

Hi Guys,

I am 90% sure now that I am going to enter the realm of TVR Blackpool Nuke Heaven!!

I have my eyes on the 4.5, but increasingly the opinion on here is there isnt much between the 4.2 and the 4.5, so for the sake of saving a few grand, the 4.2 looks like better value for money.

These TVR built engines, are they just so highly tuned that they seem to fail? From what i gather they are kicking out 80 bhp/litre which isnt bad, but there are engines out there that can better that and seem to be more reliable. Or is it more of a case that every prev owner has blatted the thing prettey much every time they use it? I know clutches are a weak point, but are the castings and machinings done on the cheap at TVR, which is why so may of the engines need rebuilds after only 50k miles?

Are the rover v8's stronger? or the speed sixes? I know that the cerbera doesnt have the rover v8, but the speed six with four valves per cyliner, is it a better engine as far as logitvity is concernd against the v's?

First cerb = rebuild as I bought a bodged one ! Dropped a valve.
Second cerb = rebuild as starting to burn lots of oil. Would have carried on ok but I dont like to have anything less than perfect (which is a costly mentality when it comes to cars).

My timing chain snapped due to one of the chain guides dropping out and falling into a sprocket. The guide bolts fell out due to them not being thread locked when they were put back in after the head gaskets were replaced. Full re build in progress.

Who rebuilt your engine, or did you do it yourself?

Was trying to crack the 450 BHP mark without going to a 4.7 crank. I took the stance that I was going to keep the car for a very long time, so spend the money now, and have a reliable engine along the way...
