Changing diff bushes
Discussion
Can't help with the question, although I've heard it can be a tough job, especially the top one, but as an aside - what are the consequences of not changing them? Mine are shot too but Andy was too busy to do them. Taking the car down the autobahn soon so just wondering if the diff is liable to fall off or anything...
Relatively simple but frustratingly awkward job to do.
Few Tips...
1. Make sure you have someone on hand to help
2. Access to the top bush is particuarly awkward so make sure you have a variety of tools available to help depending on how small your hands are
3. Blow Torch might come in handy if the top bush won't come out (access and degredation), but make sure you use it if need be in a controlled manner considering you are near the fuel tank and the bodywork
4. Give yourself at least 6 hours to do it
5. Might be worth changing out the dif oil for peace of mind?
6. Be prepared to swear a lot more than usual and also to lose a fair bit of skin/flesh from your knuckles
Jules.

Mine are only at the very early stages of going - very occasional low-speed clunk, and a little bit of backlash as you come off the power.
Ultimately, as the lash gets greater and greater, you're putting greater strain on the mounts themselves, which could lead to the mounts cracking or failing all together.
I would have just left this one a bit longer, but no I've noticed it, its really starting to annoy me, and with the ring trip in just over a month, I'm having a big push on getting everything ship-shape.

Won't fall off but will cause a knocking noise and will if left long enough cause excessive wear within the diff / shafts due to the play.Jules.

1. Make sure you have someone on hand to help
Sorted - pro mechanic mate taking the lead on this one
2. Access to the top bush is particuarly awkward so make sure you have a variety of tools available to help depending on how small your hands are
Sorted - see above
3. Blow Torch might come in handy if the top bush won't come out (access and degredation), but make sure you use it if need be in a controlled manner considering you are near the fuel tank and the bodywork
Got Oxy on hand - I'd anticipated that cutting the bugger out was likely to be the only way.
4. Give yourself at least 6 hours to do it
That I hadn't bargained for. I'd reckoned on 2 hours tops. What kills the time?
5. Might be worth changing out the dif oil for peace of mind?
Do you syphon it out of the filling hole?
6. Be prepared to swear a lot more than usual and also to lose a fair bit of skin/flesh from your knuckles
That's what I've got John for. He'll do the swearing for both of us. Mostly at me for roping him into such an annoying job.

Hmm maybe not as long as 6 hours but when I did mine I changed the Diff as well as the bushes. The time consuming part is getting the top bush out, we tried cutting but didn't have good enough tools and access to apply pressure was very restricted, so ended up cooking it to get it out, we also spent a fair bit of time getting the new poly bushes to fit as they were slightly larger than expected so ended up trimming the top one a little.

If you disconnect the diff then it's easy to empty and refill through the filling hole, if not then check when it was last done and if happy just leave it as syphonning it out may take a while as it's quite thick oil.Do you syphon it out of the filling hole?

I got mine from Racetech TVR, but only because after a quick phone around, they were the only people to actually have them physically in stock, and my slot on the four-poster is on Saturday, so I needed them in a hurry.Cheers
Not done, or seen done the supports on the diff, so you are welcome to use my lift anytime. Its kinda a lift for the use of the TVR fraternity doing interesting jobs I can watch. You will still need the mechanic though
.
I live very near brands hatch so you will have to be within striking distance

Thanks for the offer, but I live in Edinburgh.

I'll try and get some photos done as I go, so long as John doesn't give me too much abuse for being a "soft southern camera waving jessie".

Help! This is a real bugger.
How the hell do you get the plate for the upper mount out? It doesn't even look possible with the diff in situ. Is it a case of taking the two side mounts off and using the play in the prop shaft to make enough room?
Also, how on earth do you get the poly bush into the hole? I was thinking of making up a little press using a long coach-bolt and a couple of fat washers, but surely there must be a more "proper" way of doing it.
Any advice or guidance most appreciated...

That is pretty much the proper way.
As for the plate, no idea I'm afraid.
Gotta do mine again now as the bolts worked loose "again" at the ring.
While you're doing the bushes remove the 4 wing plate bolts, clean the threads, loctite the bastids into the diff and put a Nyloc nut on the back. Mine work loose pretty much once a year.
