Hello all,

Right, my back brakes are rattling like a goodun and today I'm going to sort them out.

I know that I can put silicone on the backs of the pads (apparently), but what type of silicone to use, how much and exactly which part of the pads.

Is it an easy fix, or am I going to have to take the brakes apart to complete the job?

Cheers

Any self curing silicone will do - Halfrauds sell small tubes or DIY places sell big tubes (to fit a gun). Colour is a matter of personal preference wink

You only need to use a very small amount. When you take the pads out you will see rings on the back of the pad where the pistons make contact. I just put a thin smear on the rings - enough to form a film but not enough to squeeze out and gum things up. Make sure you push the pistons well back into the caliper so they don't scrape the silicone off as you slide the pads back in. Then once the pad is in dab the brake pedal so snug the pistons up to the pad then put the retaining pins back.

Did mine 9 months ago and they are still beautifully silent.

If you can get it get red RTV, its the high temp stuff, but you only really need it if you are hammering the brakes.

Firmly apply the brake after you have refitted them and leave to rest for an hour.

This sorted my ones out a treat on my old car.

The Allen nuts on the calipers are proving a bit of a nightmare to undo.

Which ones have definitely got to be undone?

I'm having a go at the ones that are visible from the front as you would look at the wheel at road level/height.

??????

You dont need to undo the allen bolts, just straightern out the split pins and pull them out. Then remove the pads and clean then, and the caliper with some brake cleaner. Put the silicone on the back of the pad, the metal part, and refit. Refit the split pins and away you go!

OMG!

Are you trying to undo the allen bolts on the body of the caliper itself?

If you are - STOP!

They hold the caliper together.

There are 2 x allen bolts that hold the caliper itself to the hub carrier but you don't need to undo those.

Don't undo any of the bolts visabe on the front face of the caliper, the two, just visable at the back of the caliper parallel to the disk hold the disk to the hub carrier.

As has been said, on the rears it's just the two 'pins' holding the pads in.

No, no of course I wasn't whistle , just seeing if you were paying attention.

No wonder they're rattling like a marble in a tin if it's only the 2 pokey pins keeping them in place.

Cheers guys you live and learn.

By the way if I had been undoing the front allen bolts (which of course I wasn't) what might have happened to the caliper and associated bits and pieces.

^ At a guess you'd get a fluid leak from the weeping seals between the caliper halfs. No leak means that all is probably still well but if the bolts were loosened significantly I'd monitor for leaks and keep an eye on fluid levels for a while. I say this assuming the Cerb caliper is like other calipers of split design.

What kind of pads are you replacing ? and with what ? Mine are squeeling like a bh (green stuff) and rattling like a rattly thing. Seems the split pins have rattled and made the holes in the pads bigger !!! Any ideas ? When you buy pads, do you get new pins ? I was going to just buy Ap racing pads, Tvr power recommend these but wondering what everyone else is running on. SVM

Iam sure Extra 300 Driver ment to say "Refit NEW split pins and away you go!" laugh
For the sake of a few pennies dont put the old ones back in

Dependant on the condition, I wasn't going to replace them. If they look knackered, I was going to order the green stuff ones - but now maybe not.

What are people that are racing the CERBS using?

There are springs around the pins on my calipers to hold the pads steady. My front and rear brakes both squeal like a banshee: personally I love the noise.

There are on mine - maybe they need replacing as well as the pins?

Get yourself a Metro, vented, brake fitting kit from Halfauds. Its the same pad, so uses the same pins, it also has special pressed springs in there to stop the pads moving about.

Unfortunately they didn't have any and none on the computer.

How long ago did they have them in?

Any motor factor should have them, make sure you are asking for the Austin Metro, not Rover metro.

You need GBK1025
