Well, here's another one to add to the list of "pay someone else to do" jobs.

I just spent the vast majority of the weekend scraping, sanding, wire brushing and generally prepping the chassis, outriggers and suspension components for cold galvanisation and rust proofing.

It was an amasingly slow job - I'd figured on 2-3 hours for preparation, but was still going after 6 hours of having crap falling in my face. I only had one day on the ramps, after which the job had to be finished on axle stands, so I figured that the best use of the ramp time was on the prep.

I got home at the end of the day looking like I'd spent a week in a coal mine!

The problem was that loads of areas of the white stonechip paint looked fine, and was deeply reluctant to come off, but when I did scrape through, there was surface rust appearing underneath in a number of places, so all that had to come off too.

I'd also hoped that the wire brush attachment for the drill would be more use, but the paint really needed scraping of manually, and then just using the brush to tidy up afterwards.

Anyway, the rust converter went on yesterday, and I've left the heater on in the garage overnight to really thoroughly dry everything out. I'm heading back out today to get the first coat of zinc on...

I feel your pain!

We did this a few weeks back to the cerb and it is a horrible job, except we used POR15 once we had scraped off all the flaky crap. We did find one very small hole too which was welded up, just behind the front drivers wheel where all the road gunge had gathered for years!

It took me days to get that stuff off my skin, but as i do work in a coal mine, it didnt matter too muchwink

I think it would have given me the proper heebeejeebies if I'd found anything like that. Fortunately, it seems to have been pretty well looked after before (Thanks Gaz!), so nothing worse than surface rust and a couple of areas of minor pitting.

As per the suggestion posted on here a few days ago, I'm going to make a couple of little stonechip guards for the front outriggers (out of a cut up 10l fabric conditioner drum!)
