Hi guys, a common post on here about temp. I know, however was after your thoughts.

Recently I have noticed the temp guage seems to at about 95-100 when driving around town where as before it was always 90-95. Then sometimes it just seems to flick right up to the oil guage and then down again and so on, as if it has a mind of its own. Always a bit worrying when the temp gets high! The coolent has been done in the last month so wondered if the guage was faulty?confused

No fault with the guage. You have an airlock.

The easy one to get to is on the top corner of the radiator, mine has a black plastic plug that you undo with a spanner. Open this and see if any air comes out. I dont know the bleed points on the motor though, but air will be higher than the coolant, so that should give you a clue.

Mine sits around 100 and then up to 115 if I am driving around the villagewink It's well out. Sometimes the fan's are not even on so Im thinking the gauge is toasted!

Yep, definately airlock. As well as the radiator top plug, there are two bleed taps on the top of the water rails each side of the engine.Run engine and crack them until the air is out, easy job.

Bloody Hell Cerby !!!....

Park the car so that it is level - better with the front end just slighty higher than the rear, so that the bleed nut on the Radiator is the highest part of the cooling system.
Now open the big flappy thing at the front of the car - the bonnet.
The radiator is located right at the front of the car near where the bonnet hinges, it's a big black thing, and the nearside of it has a large rubber hose going into it. On the opposite side of the radiator you will find a large bolt had, it needs a big spanner, 17mm, 19mm, I can't remember. Undo this bolt and remove it.
Now start filling the Header tank - That's on the passenger side of the engine compartment near the windscreen, it's covered by the F1 panel, but the red cap of the header tank can still be seen.
Start filling the tank with water until water starts to run from the radiator where you removed the bleed bolt.
Refit the bolt and tighten it up.
There are also 2 other bleed nipples on top of the water pipes under the airboxes, but if you weren't able to find the radiator, you've got no chance of finding these! smile

Good luck.

My gauge is much more consistent, in the way that it it sits around 100 - 105 when travelling around 60mph, and reaches max when doing around 30mph town driving.

Would you assume this is the gauge? As the temp is clearly not that high. Would it be worth doing the same as above or draining and replacing coolant completely? Sorry not trying to hijack the thread. Just never worried about it due to no issues and consistent temps.

Thank you for that. Have you got a spanner I can borrow, just kidding!!!! Off to sort the airlock will let you know how I get on.

I used to live in Fossebridge between Cirencester and Northleach any where near you? Some great driving roads around there just need to mind the deer!! Thanks again.

100-105 is high for cruising at 60. Because your's seems consistent, It could be the gauge - check it against the Diags readings on the laptop - but I'd say your radiator possibly needs re-coring. Costs about £120, and will help bring the temperature back down. Mine reads 70-80 on a motorway cruise.

Water wetter and chip from Trackcar sorted my overheating problems. Never see more than 95deg and most of the time no more than 85deg
